Re: Hunter Clark
Clark has strong legs. Probably not a good idea for him to put on upper-body bulk (he doesn't have speed to burn, as it is, to be fair) - anyway, he doesn't need to (bulk up) given his evasive skills and footy smarts. He will be very handy when he returns. No doubt. Overdue for a change of luck. Imp...

You mean the best available tall talent (that was the focus of our tunnel-visioned recruiters).

Re: King ...out of form or
Billings is not a midfielder. Was never considered one. We have tended to draft the best tall forward in the draft, or worse stll, even a half forward flanker (Billings was not even a key position forward) and have been happy to overlook obvious midfield talent to get one .... Petracca, Rozee, Butte...

Re: King ...out of form or
The thing is a skinny, lanky key position forward or ruckman, etc... takes years to develop/reach their peak, and might eventually get there ... but it is never a given. Whereas a Rozee, Butterrs , Darcy Wilson etc.. are ready to hit the ground running from the word go.

Re: King ...out of form or
Port Adelaide nailed the 2018 draft. They took Connor Rozee at pick 5 and Zac Butters with pick 12 Both have been All Australian and Rozee Is Port Adelaide's captain. St Kilda took Max King at pick 4 and Gold Coast Ben King at pick 6. St Kilda did not learn from the 2014 draft chasing after the all...

Re: King ...out of form or
King is not a natural forward. He averages a contested mark or two a game ... but that's all he wants to do, contest. A Dixon, Hawkins or Tex Walker can probably get away with that (contesting mostly) with their builds. Sure, he will kick a bag of 3 or 4 once or twice a year (well, Wilson did this w...

Re: Footy Fix: Ross Lyon is the AFL's most boring coach once again - and it's suffocating the Saints' season
If we swapped Membrey with Dixon and their midfield with ours, we would have won by 10 goals. We need a decent midfield and a hulking, one-grab forward. We're probably only 4 star/high-impact players away from a premiership. We are/look "boring" because of that (probably not the game plan ...

Re: Aberration or reality check or both?
Anyway, when we get everyone fit and back, we will do okay.
Liam Henry was a big loss.
If Bonner and Stocker are considered bottom 6, we're not doing too badly.

Re: Aberration or reality check or both?
Too much energy is being wasted and misdirected on coaches and their importance ... concentrate on getting the all-important recruiting right, and everything else will fall into place.
I am not a fan of our current game plan, mind you.

Re: Aberration or reality check or both?
A rebuild presupposes astute recruiting and drafting.
That would be an aberration for us.
A club like Geelong on the other hand .. just when we think they're past it, they keep proving us wrong, thanks to their drafting and recruiting.

Re: Aberration or reality check or both?
Supporters are supporters. The problem is, it's our recruiters who have over-rated our players and their recruiting ... "Winx this, Winx that""He slid to pick18 "etc . and keep under-rating obvious midfield talent. What do we expect? We (the supporters) should be doing the recrui...

Re: Which Half Back this week
It's not enough that we have an average midfield, we're not helping things by giving/gifting midfield numbers to opposition half backs.
We effectively have two midfields to compete against.
Bailey Dale B.O.G. .... Be Our Guest (for the week). Help yourself.

Re: Which Half Back this week
So was it the unlucky bounce in 2010 or more this unfortunate game plan? It needs to be asked at some stage. Shaw, Thomas, O'Brien etc. kept rebounding everything at will in 2010 .. we made them superstars. Enright, Kelly and Milburn destroyed us in 2009 ... we gave them too much latitude. Martin 44...

Re: Trade King
Even if Max isn't the problem - and as you say we lack system and/or the required kicking skills (no arguments from me there), the bottom line is we're kicking as many goals with him or absent him at FF. The question remains, can we utilise our number 4 draft pick more productively in another positi...

Re: Trade King
Is our bombing of the ball into the F50 as a result of Max choosing not to lead as it doesn't come naturally to him or is it because he's being instructed not to lead? Our default F50 entry method, to bomb away to a contested hot spot, might just be due to our unreliable or poor kicking skills? But,...

Re: Trade King
To be fair though, if you look at Max's stats, he's credited with 4.2 inside 50s per game ave this year, which suggests he's roaming around a bit more ( outside the 50m arc) - which would of course impact the number of goals he kicks himself, as well as his accuracy, as he's kicking it from a bit fu...

Re: Trade King
Nothing like an over reaction. Glad some are not on match committee or head of football 74 games and Ave just under 2 goals per game in a team which has made finals once in previous 4 season. Give it some context: Tom Hawkins first 60 games averaged 1.3 goals per game Jack Riewoldt first 68 games a...

Re: Trade King
I reckon Max Heath can play the role that King is playing at the moment, and he'd be a better shot at goal. King is not soft ... he might just be better suited to another key position. I'm actually thinking CHB ... as an intercept mark, spoling from behind, etc... Some lateral thinking. Is King more...

Re: Match Thread Saints v Giants Round 5 2024
Our game plan is leaving too much space for their halfbacks ... we need man on man.
King is being wasted at full forward.
