Are we not lamenting the need for a strong passionate leader? Isn't St Kilda perceived in AFL circles as being to "Vanilla"? He'll become a great coach, in the mould of Barassi, Sheedy and Clarkson!

Re: Right Place at the Right Time? AFL Rule Changes Imminent....
I don't favour 16 a side though - yes, the VFA had Miller, Cook, Radojevic, Hammond, etc. etc. but the VFL had Wade, Hudson, McKenna, Blethyn, Jesaulenko, and Moncrieff through the same period. That's correct, but VFL was opened up at that time with the introduction of the centre square, initially ...

I'd like you to respond as to how you think 16 a side was a failure, as I think the fact that the forwards dominated refutes your argument. As a Port supporter, you would have enjoyed Fred Cooks "Plugger" like efforts, heading the VFA goal kicking over several seasons.

Re: Right Place at the Right Time? AFL Rule Changes Imminent....
16 a side didn't work in the old VFA. Wrong, it most definitely did work. In the 60's/70's the VFA was big. It was on Sundays, when VFL was only on Saturdays. Got good crowds. The game was free wheeling and the Full Forwards dominated with the extra space. Names like "Frosty" Millar, Bob ...

Re: Right Place at the Right Time? AFL Rule Changes Imminent....
Simple, Change to 16 a side. Less players = Less congestion!
Less players needed = smaller playing list = less player payments = better financial situation for the club!!!!

Robbie Muir was something to watch. He had every right to "go off" with the sh!t he was given. Sadly he was always described as being the transgressor in the public/medias eye at the time. St Kilda has little "respect" in the comp so he was"colored" as a firebrand and d...

P.S Did our major goalkicker from 66 GF and the most famous point-scorer in history also play there a fair bit in early 70s?

+1.
Totally reliable and impassable in their role.
They also had a chemistry with their full backs, ie Bob Murray and Cowboy Neale, and knew when to leave their man to fill the hole in the goal square when the FB moved up the ground.

Re: Saints in Zone trial
Don't disagree with the game being umpired properly. We all wish for that......! But 16-a-side team takes the umpire factor out of the equation. Same goes for refereeing numbers in zones at stoppages. 16 in a team remains 16 in a team no matter what decisions umpires make or more importantly, fail t...

Oswald was a centreman And a bloody good one too. Pity that Ian Stewart came along, more or less at the same time, and squeezed him out!! Just another note on 16-a-side, the VFA introduced the concept to overcome their perception way back then that the game was becoming congested and it proved to b...

With no wings we wouldn't have had the likes of Keith Grieg, Dougie Hawkins, Turner from Geelong, Nicky Winmar, Lance Oswald, Dipper, Francis Bourke, et al. No, no changes to this rule. Oh yes we would have!!!! They were champs who happened to play on the wing at that time. They would today be desc...

Re: Saints in Zone trial
In my opinion, 16 a side is a far better way to go than using zones. Don't knock it, as It was a success for the VFA. Those games in the 60's, 70's, 80's etc were very competitive. 16 a side didn't change the basic principles of how the game of Australian Rules is played. Football as we know it is ...

Yep, I recall that day as well. It signalled to the establishment of the VFL that the Saints were a coming force, playing off in the G.F. in 2 years and winning that big one in 3. Lets hope this is an omen for 2019 and 2020!!!

I cannot believe that ppl are still banging on about this supposed bye. Fair dinkum, Sydney finished on top and were always going to beat the Cats. They are a far better team. Ppl who backed the Cats I found bewildering. The Bye had nothing to do with their dismal start. They were simply outclassed...

I also saw games played at both grounds and both had character. The stands literally rocked at the JO. Moorabin had the animal enclosure. JO is in St Kilda, is easy to get to, and had a great surface, but parking was terrible. Moorabin was where we won our Premiership, is not so easy to get to and h...
