Neil Besanko "Racehorse" was a competent half back.
He was one of the fastest players I have seen at the Saints, along with Aussie Jones 2-3 decades later.
Aussie of course, was also a very fine half back (and wing), with pin-point disposal.

Re: Best Saints wingmen in the past 50 years?
I would have Trott as the best wingman. Winmar was perhaps a more complete player, but played more as a half forward. He even starred at full forward when Plugger was out. Cunningham and Jones were also great. Have we seen many faster players than Aussie at his prime? Perhaps Besanko in the early 70...

We need a champion or two!
Over the journey it seems that we have regularly had a champion ot two on our list. Perhaps even three on occasions. Who are our next champions now that Roo has retired? Will it be Billings? Perhaps Gresham? Will it be a free agent or perhaps someone else ? I have compiled the following list of cham...

We need a bit of toughness!
I wish that our side had a bit more mongrel. When looking back over the years, we have had a few players who were pretty tough. Not as many now however? I had a bit of fun when compiling the following team of tough nuts. Some only played briefly. One still plays and I hope that he turns out to be re...

Unfulfilled talent over the past 60 years
I sometimes wonder how the Saints would have performed if certain players had managed to fulfill their potential at the club You know what I mean... Players who had injuries at pivotal times, had off / on field issues, or simply left the club. I can name ten ex players to start with, in no particula...

Re: Our best Tall Back Pocket in the past 50 years
Dont seem to remember JM playing BP more CHB who would often be thrown forward or have a run on the ball.A great of the game who could play almost any position Reckon that knee cost us a flag or two I agree he was a great tall player, freakish kick on both sides, beautiful torpedos, drop punts and ...

2017 Sum up in one or two words
In 1-2 words or so, in a non serious manner, I have attempted to sum up the seasons of the 2017 players... 1. Went backwards 2. Big presence 3. Courageous on-baller 4. Promises heaps 5. Resurrected career? 6. Muliple disposals 7. Don't write-off! 8. Promising again! 9. Tackle king 10. Persistence pe...

Re: 35 is the new 26
Cleverly evading a tackle in the third term, and striding in to kick a nice goal...
This reminded me of a previous number 35. A long way to go, but looking better and better.
An exciting, polished player, Future gun!

Re: All the best Zac
Zac will be remembered at Hawthorn as a young skinny full back who was taken apart by Anthony Rocca at the start of his career. Several years later he had filled out considerably, and he managed to perform quite well at St Kilda. He was much derided by many of our fans, but generally provided a stro...

Re: Where Roo sits
Thank you Roo, What a career! Based on my experience as a member and supporter of the Saints, and attending about 650 - 700 Saints matches, my ratings are as follows: 1. Lockett. By far the most dominating presence we have ever had. Brute of a man, incredibly fast on the lead, best kick for goal eve...

Re: Why do we keep getting thrashed?
Good and interesting post overall! I agree with many of the points made. As an older supporter I also believe that there are deeper structural issues, especially related to player development. For instance, in my view our focus on player development (ie. at the VFL Sandringham level) can breed young...

Crows celebration of 20 year anniversary
Gosh I hope that we spoil the Crows of 1997, 20 year anniversary of their first premiership. This is to be held this weekend. I will never forget being at the MCG on that day in late September 97. Until the 15 - 20 minute mark of the last quarter, I carried the belief that the Mighty Sainters would ...

Let's be realistic about free agents!
I do not want to be negative. I want to be realistic...I look back at the period between 2004-2005 when the Saints had several A and B, or at least potential emerging A graders. These included Robert Harvey, Fraser Gehrig, Aaron Hamill, Nick Riewoldt, Lenny Hayes, Austinn Jones, Justin Koschitske, S...

Re: Cameron Mooney - a lowly meat head
Cam lost me in his early days of reporting on the radio, not long after his retirement. He was talking about how much greater Nick R may have been if he'd been fed by Geelong's, rather than our midfield. That really put me off. There is no doubt that Banger, Aussie, Lenny, Dal, BJ, Joey etc. had (or...

Re: Paddy Whackas, enough already!!!!!
I have never posted before now. Was at the Sandy Richmond game earlier and IMO Paddy had more presence than ever. He was really quite ferocious and at one stage, collided heavily with a tigers player in an intimidating manner. Paddy's stats may have not been overly impressive but IMO he came of age ...
