Re: What about the Ruck?

One of the trends of 2019 so far is winning hitouts and losing games. As someone wrote above, you have to look at the combined impact of Marshall and Acres against Gawn and Preuss. We won the clearances and contested possession. The point of winning a hitout is to enable your midfielders to win a cl...

Re: Marshall

There's a stat in the AFL "clearances from stoppages".

Marshall is the equal 4th ranked in the AFL on this stat. The only players ahead of him are Josh Kelly, Patrick Cripps and Lachie Neale.

Re: Marshall

Destroyed McEvoy and Ceglar. Most ruckmen try and win a hitout to then give their midfielders a chance at winning a clearance. Marshall just wins the f**** clearance himself. 7 clearances to him, 2 to the Hawks ruckmen combined. Forget the irrelevant stat of hitouts - Marshall is the best ruck playe...

Re: Bassat on the focus now- The Age

Put my hand up as someone who thought Seaford was the right move at the time and that Archie Fraser was hard done by because the move was completely driven by Westaway, Levin and Gdanski. Particularly the latter who had oversight of the project. However it was clearly a bad move from a cultural pers...

Re: 2019 Coaching. It's a lose-lose.

Anything less than playing finals is a failure. Richardson has twice got us to finish just outside the 8. Not good enough to just repeat that in his 6th year. We will go nowhere by finishing 9th-12th again. In my view, he should be out if we don't play finals. I think the Board can justify that posi...

Re: Gubby Allan joins the Saints

Apparently both North and the Crows were keen on Gubby but he didn't want to leave Victoria and we offered him a bigger role. His conduct with Whitfield was something that a hundred other footy managers have done. He was the bloke who got caught. He's a relationships guy and I wouldn't be surprised ...

This is a guy who openly tells his team mates (one of whom has relayed this conversation to my wife) that he struggles to get motivated, looks for shortcuts at training, and would prefer to be playing suburban footy with his mates rather than AFL. On attitude alone he should be delisted. Absolute sp...

AFL rules now prohibit someone from being appointed a senior coach unless (i) they've already been a senior coach or (ii) they've completed the Level 4 coaching course.

Re: No cattle, what can a coach do?

Hawks won 4 games by less than 6 points. Lose those four and they finish 13th. Lose two and they finish 8th. It's a very fine line in this competition. Buckley couldn't buy a supporter last year and now he's a GF coach. Not arguing against Clarkson's genius (would take him in a heartbeat) but I thin...

Re: Adam Kingsley - GONE // Ratten + Lade joining

Ratten actually has some real coaching chops. His senior record at Carlton does not tell the real story there. He got chopped by a completely dilusionary board. Hawks assistant for a while. Will be our next senior coach if our first month next year is anything like 2018. Ratten was 3 points from a ...

Thomas made us relevant. Whether or not he could coach was meaningless given where we were between 1998 and 2002. He made us relevant again. He's not the man to coach football in 2019, he's been out of coaching footy for a long time and his business is in an exciting phase. Coaching is in many ways ...

In 2015, we won 12 last quarters, despite only winning 6 games for the year. Adam Basil had us supremely fit and we made a number of late comebacks in games that we ultimately lost. Over the past three seasons, I've felt that our ability to run out games has deteriorated progressively. I'm not sure ...

Re: Mitchell set to leave Eagles, return to Victoria.

Not sure about Mitchell. Wasn't universally loved at the Hawks. Hard task master and didn't always relate well to other people - think Nathan Buckley. Unsure whether he'd make the transition to senior coach. He's also had pretty limited experience. Certainly he's miles behind someone like Caracella ...

Don't post much on here anymore. The striking thing about this thread (and others) is the widespread agreement among everyone. None of us can see any passion or hope. Failing to live up to expectations always creates despair, but it's more than that. Most fans realised 3-4 weeks ago that finals were...

Re: New goalkicking coach - ex-Hawk Ben Dixon

A 7th placed finished would have seen us play Port in Adelaide (as Port would have won one fewer game). There was a fair chance we would have won that game and made it to the semi-final against GWS, who we had beaten this year. Our inability to play finals can be solely attributed to poor goal kicki...
