The AFL has approved the full list of 33 players and circulated it to clubs last week. Under the newly formed rules, clubs will be able to list the players as category B rookies if the prospects are overlooked at the national and rookie drafts.

The club will need to lodge relevant paperwork immediately after the rookie draft on November 28 to secure the multicultural or indigenous talent.

Anybody know anything about Mitchell McCarthy? The only one I could find plays for Dandenong Stingrays and looks more like a Viking than an indigenous kid.

assume it is this Mccarthy?

No mention of him being indigenous in that article, so I'm inclined to doubt that's him.

I can recall seeing an article in The West Australian newspaper, I think it was last week, I was browsing through it in a cafe whilst having a coffee. It was about a young indigenous player possibly in the draft this year that Freo were interested in named Mitchell McCarthy. Said he was currently playing TAC football in Victoria. Didn't take much interest in the article in as it related to Fremantle. Pity I hadn't read this thread before and I might have taken more notice.

Are Freo or other clubs able to have first dibs on him in the drafts ? However, if he is overlooked by them , does he then become a Saints category B rookie - is that how it works?

I think the article said he was a WA lad, but playing in Vic this year.

Confusing, but he's the only Mitch McCarthy that comes up on google. And if there's more than one, then the nature of this vid suggests this is the one linked to the Saints.

Would be a major win if he was the Mitch McCarthy listed. I dont recall the Saints having any other Cat B zone than the Dande/Bayside zone so there is a good possibilty it is him?

Gees if that is the case, the Indigineous/Multi Cultural Cat B rookie process is already showing it is open to manipulation.

Surely it was meant for kids from outside mainstream Cities like - Ross Tungatalum or multi cultural kids who havent played AFL before. Not kids from the TAC Cup and State Leagues surely?

http://dandenong.starcommunity.com.au/j ... a-purpose/

Pretty sure this is him. He is indigenous and is a Mt.Eliza boy.

The article explains a bit. He is playing TAC now but was in America chasing a college basketball scholarship in 2015 after training with the Stingrays in their development as a 16 year old. Apparently Bball was hos first love and now Mark Wheeler suggests the Stingrays stole him from Basketball.

There was an attempt to lure him from Basketball as a junior but he never committed. He returned to Melb and asked for another run with Dandenong, inspired by seeing Lonie Weitering White and Rice get drafted.

Looks a real athletic type. Recently broke his foot though and has no real history tgan a few TAC games this year.

Seems strange to be hoping he is overlooked. Surely we have some priority??
Anyone would think we are running a rehab centre!
