Saints home for Christmas- Moorabbin announcement

Post: # 1593357Post saintbrat »

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2015-12-1 ... oming-home
In the spirit of giving, the Saints have added a surprise 13th day to the 12 Days of Christmas campaign …. and what a day it is!

Today, we are giving supporters a present to remember – the gift of returning the Club to our spiritual home, Moorabbin.

The magic of Moorabbin will be honoured and brought back to life after the Victorian Government this morning confirmed a $12-million commitment to return St Kilda to the famous ground.

“This is a fantastic result for the Club, our supporters and the local community,” St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis said.

“A new elite training, administration and community facility at Moorabbin will underpin our future success and build on the positive momentum at the Saints.”

Victorian Minister for Sport, John Eren, described Moorabbin as ‘St Kilda’s sacred turf’.

“We’re upgrading it, so the Saints can return to their spiritual home and the community has a state-of-the-art facility it can be proud of,” he said.

Today’s funding announcement follows earlier commitments from the AFL and AFL Victoria ($6 million), Kingston City Council ($5 million), Southern Football & Netball league (SFNL - $250,000) and South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL - $150,000) and means the approximately $30 million project will now proceed. St Kilda will also need to make a significant contribution towards the project.

Someone will inherit a good facility at Seaford.

Let's hope the Moorabbin upgrade takes into account how quickly the club outgrew the size of the Seaford building and
plans accordingly at Moorabbin.

We don't want to see portables at the new facility within 12 months of moving in.

How does the size of the Moorabbin oval compare with Etihad and the MCG ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

So does that mean we need to put in over 6 million dollars? That is really going to test us when we already about 10 million in debt.

Ive been told,by the groundskeeper there, that the oval is exactly the same as the MCG.

Confirm.

When the Saints moved in, and Moorabbin FC were kicked out, the ground was resized to the exact proportions of the MCG.

I doubt it is as wide as the G but I could be wrong. It would be about the same length though.

They will re do the playing surface and make it what ever size they want surely. I also assume they will probably make a second oval.

I wonder if they will look at doing some sort of "debt repayment" fundraising push. Richmond and Melbourne did that to clear the debt that was crippling them and stopping them funding other projects. We are really at a key point for the club. Nearly everyone agrees getting back to Morrabbin is the right direction to go in. The team is perhaps a couple of years away from finals and the increased revenue that goes with a successful team (and hopefully a flag). I think people would understand why we have to get the debt down and having the Morrabbin project as a visual flagship gives it a real focus and reason for people to dig deep.

This is great news. Can't wait to see the plans and then the finished product.

When will the VFL games start being played there? Is there a set date?

The next season after the ground is finished.

I thought we were going alone in the reserves starting 2017 so we have about a year to finish it.

The current dimensions of the MCG are 160m X 141m; they may have been slightly different in 1965.

From memory, when we moved to Moorabbin in 1965, the dimensions were 161m X 132m, although they were in yards in those days (176 yards X 144 yards) so I have converted them to metres. I have a book somewhere with all the measurements but dunno where it is. For comparison, Docklands is about 160m X 129m. Waverley was longer and wider. The Junction Oval was shorter and a bit wider.

I think its 8 million short of what they hoped to raise, but don't quote me.
It's a bit of a concern as a lot of the Morrabbin councils funding also goes to building up the surrounding area, parks etc so not all of it goes towards the training facility,

Then there's how much is needed to restore what's already there, when you look at the bombers and hawks building on vacant lots and spending twice as much. I hope we DO get what we need, Still we have to do something, and we need it for our VFL team
