THE arrival of Jake Carlisle and Nathan Brown has helped add an adventurous layer to St Kilda’s backline, according to Dylan Roberton.

The defender believes the big-bodied recruits have granted fellow backmen more freedom in a new-look defensive half.

With Sam Fisher and Sean Dempster have retired, Brown and Carlisle have stepped in to man opposition key forwards every week.

It has helped Saints leader Roberton blossom with the former Fremantle defender enjoying a career-best season.

Brown crossed from Collingwood last year while Carlisle made his club debut this year after serving a drug suspension stemming from his time at Essendon.

Roberton admitted the fresh mix failed to click in the Round 1 loss to Melbourne, but said the chemistry was starting to work.

Fresh from a full pre-season Roberton is averaging 25 disposals this season, up from 18.8 in 2016.

Carlisle and Brown kept Jesse White and Darcy Moore to a combined one goal in the Round 4 victory against the Magpies, but were overpowered in Sunday’s loss to Geelong.
