I still cringe at the memory of those Saints “supporters”(?) who actually booed this guy as he went to collect his winners medal after the 2004 Wizard Cup Final.

Really? Troy Schwarze had way more class than those dropkicks, (who probably cheered him when he kicked the winning goal against Brisbane later that season)

I was there that night, and it was a massive beat up.

Pretty sure McGuire had plenty to say about it which gave it oxygen, and it was that week before round 1 with no footy so it filled some column space.

How so?

The booing was clearly audible on tv.

And at the ground.

Pretty ordinary.

Whipping boy who really stuck at it. Once put on the wing was a solid player and the goal against Brisbane was awesome to stick it up those who booed at the pre season GF

A good, honest, loyal, toiler. Most clubs have a whipping boy, sadly. Troy was simply warming the seat for Raph Clarke

Very ordinary. I looked around at the time to see who was doing it, and the only people I could see actually booing were the geelong cheersquad. My first thought was that they were pumping it through the PA. But that would be a conspiracy theory, wouldn't it?
They had a go at him all night.

Still bother you huh? For all you know it could have been the opposition supporters who jeered him. I can't even remember who the Saints played.

I was always really disappointed with how RL cut him like he did.

Came back to preseason training out of shape and was just outright delisted to “make a statement”.

Always felt the difference between good coaches and great coaches is what they achieve with the players that aren’t superstars and Troy was a good example of a guy that had talent but flaws too.

Can’t help but feel that Richo would have challenged him to be the fittest he ever was that season and really worked him to it... instead we just cut him

Why was he booed?

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Because he stuffed up a few times but St Chris reckons it was a beat up.

It’s weird. I can remember the booing... can’t remember what he did wrong. I think it was a bad kick in or two

Head high tackle on a geelong player. Saints fans outraged.

Maybe we could have used some of that thinking in 09

Went down and player-coached Sorrento to at least one flag. I saw him play a few times down there, and he was easily a cut above that level.

An underrated performer at the Saints. Grant Thomas saw his value however.
