This one will be interesting.

Does Robert Muir get a gig?

Winmar. Burke for runner up. Joffa for heart.

For mine in no particular order...

Buggsy Moran
Stuart Trott
Russell Reynolds (played a lot half back as well)
Joffa Cunningham
Phil Narkle (flanks as well)
Aussie Jones
Robbie Muir......as pure wingmen.

In the later 90's it was more of a midfield role filled by Nicky Winmar and even Nathan Burke, Peckett, Mathew Young, Joel Smith, Tony Brown and you could argue Goddard played the wing floated back and forward in his prime years of 2008 - 2012.

Other pretty handy mids like Dal & Joey played wing/outside mid in the Ross Lyon era and a fairly decent tall blonde former forward of German extraction went ok on the wing in the 2016 season.

Trott was sensational. Tough and skilful. Hated him at Hawthorn.

Winmar
Trott
Muir
Cunningham

Would be my order.

Muir might have been #1 if he played in an era like today when they couldn't get in his head via the colour of his skin.

He towelled up Keith Grieg when he was at his peak.

If Winmar was a wingman then it has to be him. If not, I’ll go with Joffa Cunningham.

John bonney once told me a story about he and big carl .
They had left training and were on nepean hwy at a set of lights
Carl gave an admirer a wink . Next thing John was walking home. No complaints.
Now that's a wingman !

I forgot Mad dog. How could I? What a player. As talented as anyone I've seen in a saints' jumper. Cood a been a contender. Burkey played most of his early footy on the wing. You can't leave him out of the discussion.

Robbie Muir was quite a player, unfortunately he only played spasmodically. Winmar is the best, Gil McAdam was pretty close. Although Muir, unfortunately had the potential to be better.

Stuart Trott by a long, long way IMO. Muir could have been anything, but how could you seriously consider a player who was such a divisive figure, his only consistency was upsetting the club's applecart.

Bugsy Moran continued to improve into the '70's, was a very fine player and solid citizen. John Bonney was an unbelievably gifted player and as hard as bluestone. I remember him cleaning up Bluey Hampshire in a one on one contest against Geelong at Moorabin one day. One of them wasn't going to get up and big Bluey was stil stocktaking his ribs months later. Unfortunately, JB's career was disrupted for long periods with the Saints.

Any Stuart Trott clone would still be a terrific player today.

Winmar, in what i can remember. Cunningham and Jones were very good. McAdam skilled but inconsistent. Trott before my memory.

1. MUIR
2. TROTT
3. CUNNINGHAM.

Cuz was really a half forward flanker but as a wingman he had the drop on the other three.

Johnny Bonney used to run our local milk bar. Lovely bloke. Of course better known as second rover to Rossy Smith, but thanks for the good story re his "wingman " role !

As to wingmen , my vote goes to Aussie Jones , just ahead of Stewie Trott, then Joffa. Aussie of course moved to HBF later in his career, but played many fine games on the wing.

Only other decent wingman that hasn't been mentioned so far would be John Manzie. John played 117 games for the Saints between 1967 and 1975 including the 1971 Grand Final.

Russell Greene and Val Perovic should get honourable mentions

I would have Trott as the best wingman.
Winmar was perhaps a more complete player, but played more as a half forward.
He even starred at full forward when Plugger was out.

Cunningham and Jones were also great.
Have we seen many faster players than Aussie at his prime?
Perhaps Besanko in the early 70's?

I go back to 1958 when we had Bill Coady and Roger Head on the wings.
The team was starting to develop with Howell, Roberts,Guy and Guyatt

In my 30 odd years as a Saint, if Winmar is classed as a wingman, there can be no contest. I can't really comment on anyone who preceded him.
