And that he needs to trust them more. The players told ritcho who should be in the midfield vs Giants and to leave players home in the forward line. Amazing.

And the result is some self belief and a win against the top team!

But well done to Richo for actually listening! Some coaches would bury their head in the sand to protect their ego

I suspect he’s referring to the Simon Lethlean interview.

I think a similar kind of thing happened with Sydney and Hawthorn. Coaches and players identified some problems with the game plans they were running with and they turned things around very quickly.

I remember one of the successful AFL coaches some years back, saying that regardless of what style of play the team needs to follow, players have to enjoy their footy, and yesterday it was obvious that something was working better and there was more spring in the step.

I think the players took more ownership of the play and attacked a lot more- looks like Richo's coaching may have been a bit overbearing and strangled some players in their natural game for a while now- even since later last season.

Well done Richo. Good leaders listen to their men, good leaders aren't authoritarian.

I have worked at lots of different places that had one thing in common.
They all said 'we value your opinion' and did anonymous surveys on employee engagement, satisfaction, etc
And they always asked the workers for feedback on how "we could do things better".
Not many of them took our comments on board.
The ones who acted on our suggestions, usually waited 5 months to implement changes so they could claim ownership- and claim that management had thought of them.
But we all know where the ideas came from.

It has ever been thus, WS. Ever since Zog and Thad took charge of the caves and campfires, those in control have always exploited others for personal gain.

We played well in parts but we were lucky that GWS was off target last night. Once we start kicking straight we will be so much better. Cant wait for the Battle axe to start getting games.
More positives than negatives last night and if you told me before the game we would draw I would have been wrapped. Now to back it up in TAssie

Everyone knows, or thinks, that Richo is a good bloke.

I think that this is his failing. But maybe in a slightly different way than most.

From what I have seen he loves the players. LOVES them. He really seems to be a father figure. Or wants to be.

It doesn’t matter, the result is the same.

His mindset, I believe, has been working hard to protect them. Play a game plan that has tried to protect them from pain and failure

Keep them safe. Just as a father would.

That way there can always be a lot of ‘positives’ and ‘pleasings’.

Very modern :)

There has to be a time when the chicks are allowed to spread their wings and fly.

Maybe, just maybe, this is what has happened. The group has told him, and now shown him, that they are ready to move on.

I disagree with the media that we lack talent. I think we have a lot untapped and a whole lot more to be untapped.

I hope Richo maintains the faith. It should have been done a year or more ago.

My belief is that we are 12 months behind where we should be in development because he has worked so hard at protecting his boys.

Hopefully it is time to let them shine.

Whether it is a leadership strength or coaching weakness is a matter of interpretation, I guess!
If a leader were to, say, go and research overseas developments or policies for six months, and no one notices - is that a reflection on their leadership capabilities, or a strength?

This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

That is hard to quantify Mbogo.

AFL players are judged harshly. For the most part they are very young men.

Most captains are in their mid to late 20's. At that age it isn't easy to express a differing opinion to an intimidating coaching panel. Let alone an opinion that would be taken seriously.

I don't know how old you are Mbogo, but when I was in my 20's I wouldn't have had the balls to tell my superiors that they were wrong.

Which, for me, makes what the team may have done even more pertinent. They had the belief to tell their superiors that they were wrong and that as a team they were ready to take on the best.

Nailed it.

What that means on the footy field is you don’t force the team to play extra numbers at the contest because Dangerwood is so good, but you allow the boys to go one on one and back them for the challenge.

IF you don’t, you are basically saying to the players they are not good enough, and that is how they will play.

Back the boys - may result in losing the contested possession count, but enables a more even weight of numbers elsewhere.

On Saturday, both teams had one spare man in defence but otherwise it was one on one.

Exactly, and when we won a contest on the weekend we had places to go and people to see.

A wonderful contrast to the Geelong game.

They also played better presumably because they bought into the game plan (because it was their plan!) - they were motivated to demonstrate that the plan works.
They're never going to play well while they're trying to demonstrate to the coach that the game plan doesn't work - which I'd say a few guys have been doing over the previous weeks.
