Any Port Melbourne players to pick up?

Post: # 1150025Post DK27 »

I was working today so missed the VFA GF. A team that thrashed a side with 15 listed AFL players in it must have some AFL quality players to draft. Any suggestions?

Not really. Port have a lot of mid-age players in the likes of Valenti, Pinwill, Baird, McMahon, McGrath and Pleming who have all been around the mark for a long while.

None would add anything to an AFL side.

Their success is built around a side that has been together for a long while and have an intimate knowledge of each others' game.

Galea and Rose both played at Williamstown and maybe the two possibilities but the jury is out.

Would look at Lynch to add some pace.

Patrick Rose has a very similar game style to Milne, Lynch, LeCras in that fact he plays as a small fwd who can lead up...or crumb....and is a natural goal kicker

McGrath and McMahon are both over 30 and retiring, as is Baird

Valenti is a very good player.....GWS would be mad not to take him....dees made a poor call on him...

Lynch is too light....68kg

Gelea could give 3-4 years of really good service. Looked almost unstoppable at times today. Great lead, beautiful kick and a strong pair of hands.

Rose had a go at the Dogs but has really killed it at Port the last couple ofyears, goal kicking mid with skills and pace.....what exactly did we lack thisn year again?

Malcolm Lynch, Chris Cain, Billy Burstin and Sam Dwyer are all young goers

Even though Valenti is "mid aged" (25 by the start of next season) the guy is an out and out gun.

Plenty to like at Port.

Why not pick up some middle aged ready recruits to top up the team?
Carlton got Duigan...

TBH, we still have a good core 10 or so players, around 26-29ish so we could get another crack at the big one, instead of investing all in youth (18-19 yr olds) and having to wait for them to develop/hope they are good enough. By that time that core 10 or so players would of ended.

because it is a team of good players, not a handful of brilliant players.... Shows how well Ayres has done with them, but the knockers will disagree.

So even though you arrogantly posted those other names the answer to the question was no. Why didnt you say that in the first place?

Nice to see you butting in...

Just to clarify

I answered to a query on the thread....about my view on a few port players

Then

Someone replied about afl options from a VFA side

Then i gave some examples of how that has worked previously

The came the arrogant reply...."we're PINNING our hopes on a VFL side" which was taken out of context.....

So i clarified my response and answered his jibe..

I know you love to try and makeme out to be the bad guy and trot out the arrogant line (pot kettle) read the thread and at least be accurate.

And os it ok for you to enter in on discussions....but not others??
If i am arrogant...what the hell are you....i cant hold a candle to you

I've been talking up lynch all year. He is fast, kicks goals and by his own admission wasn't ready when he was drafted the first time. He would be an ideal pick up for us if he was a mature rookie.

May not have had a great game yesterday, but Valenti dominated this season.

He just seems to find space, and even when surrounded has time to spare.

Worth a look with a late pick if available.

Article about Sam Dwyer in the HS today, giving him a big wrap on his game yesterday, including saying he helped turn the tide in the 2nd quarter. Apparently AFL clubs asked for him to be added to the draft camp list after a 34 possie BOG game in round 20, so someone will almost certainly pick him up somewhere, as he has much sought after speed.
As I've been saying for a while now, if we get back Lenny and Gwilt and maybe add Tommy and get a good year out of a Cripps, Siposs, or Ledger, plus add someone like a Dwyer, who is mature and ready to go, we could have one last crack at a flag next year, especially if we could get improved years out of Roo and BJ.

I'd look at Hugh Sandilands, tall, strong, fast, booming kick, good underpressue, would be much better option than Dawson or Clarke down back, has also played on quite a few AFL key forwards throughout the season and held his own.
