Milne is only the fourth St Kilda player to reach 500 goals, emulating Tony Lockett (898), Bill Mohr (735) and Stewart Loewe (594).

The 32-year-old also joined former Swan Brett Kirk as the equal second most games played for a rookie-listed player, with 241 games.

Greater Western Sydney midfielder James McDonald leads the way with 253 games, including 251 for Melbourne. Milne was rookie-listed by the Saints in 2000 after spending time with Essendon reserves.

Teammate Sam Fisher said Milne hadn't pumped up his impending milestone, despite the perception of his cheeky nature.

"He was edging closer as the weeks went on but Milney's not like that," Fisher told AFL.com.au.

"He wasn't too fazed by it. We pumped him up in the change rooms after the game but he just wanted to celebrate the win with the boys.

"That's the sort of person he is."

Coach Scott Watters said Milne was a "superstar" of the club.

"We know playing the small forward role is one of the most difficult roles in the competition, so to do that over a long period of time is a real tribute to the way he goes about his work," Watters said.

"On game day, what people don't see is what he does off the field at training.

"You talk about barometers for the side and I think [Milne] is one of those for our club."

Fisher said Milne - who is the fifth small forward to obtain the milestone - remained one of the best goalsneaks in the League.

"Last year, he had one of his better years so he's still up and about and one of the best in the competition on his current form," Fisher said.

"He's got a couple of good years left in him, hopefully. We don't want to see him go just yet.

Certainly is. I love Milney - my favourite player. Would probably really dislike him if he played for anyone else.....but he doesn't!!!!!! Great effort champ.

Terrible comparison. Milne's consistency and ability to play a team role put him head and shoulders above those guys.

always marveled at the guys talent but also get so much pleasure out of the way he pisses off oppo supporters.
If he had of kicked that goal against the skunks to take the flag it would have been the pinnacle for me following the Saints over all these years.
