beat me by that much------- or the length of reading the article and remembering him correcting me about players and their characteristics....

A genteman of the game- when that characteristic can be not recognised enough,.

A good spotter of talent

I have heard in 1997 he wanted to select Nick Stephens but was overruled by Alves

and in 99 he like Murphy and Greene but Timmy liked Beetham

I used to occasionally volunteer in the office at Moorabbin, John would always have a chat as did the great Trevor.

Gladdens the heart to read that and know he is one of us.
Loves our club and fights the naysayers.

Great read, what a plus having him at the club.
Certainly brought some talent in.
Not everything is in disarray it seems.
Interesting stat re 11 wins per year over 10 seasons
All is not lost

Robert Murphy could have come in handy over the last 10 years :(

I do believe Green was his main choice that season and he was extremely frustrated by not beong able to make that call

I don't often congratulate the journos from the Hun, but genuine kudos to Jay Clark.

After the last few weeks, somewhat refreshing to read a genuine human interest story about a stalwart of our club that doesn't use the words "beleaguered", "crisis", "debacle" and "shattered" interchangeably in the opening paragraph.

Loved the bits about Banger and Warnie.

I liked the article and laughed that he didn't know how to delete his 10,000 plus emails.

No doubt explains why he never replied to a couple I sent re a few players from Werribee that I thought he should take look at
Barlow was the last one... Duhhhh

And the president said " I did not have sex with that woman"
And our former president said " Football is like golf" 

I heard him speak at a luncheon once.
He talked a bit about recruiting and some of the better and worse decisions.
Then someone asked if there were any dirty tricks in the draft.
He said not now, but back in the old days ......

He then proceeded to tell a whole lot of stories about the early days of the draft when clubs used various techniques to "hide" players.
He also went back to the old old pre draft days when recruiters would go and wave cash in front of country teenage recruits, buy presents for their mothers or whatever it took to win their favour.
Told some amazing stories, some based on his experience and some based on stories he had heard.

I hope one day he puts it all in a book, even if he has to change a few names!

the green one is correct...think they were hoping he would slip to our second pick...and he nearly did.....

He gets it wrong too.......GT wanted Andrew Swallow. Bevo said no because his kicking was a weakness. Real missed opportunity there

Definitely correct about Swallow.

I was extremely pissed about Howard ATT I had first hand knowledge about him, it was no slight on Brad, but pick 26 on a kid who was seen as a late pick/rookie at best... It was a poor pick?

Bevo did have a habit of going on gut, or informal info from an amatuer scout.... He sort of stayed in the 80's wrt recruiting, and often went against the obvious well reported pick.... In favour of a feeling that a kid may be good after a game.

Howard was a great athlete.... With a good attitude.... Which is why he was drafted....

He struggled to get a kick.

How did you have first hand knowledge of Howard?
