I love Roo

Post: # 1436963Post Cairnsman »

I just read this article in today's Age and got a little teary.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/n ... 347ky.html

I must admit I was a little critical of Roo in 2011 because I thought he'd chucked in the towel...how wrong I was. The guy clearly has some rare qualities that have little to do with what he can do on a footy field.

Great article. Roo really epitomises our motto, "Strength Through Loyalty".
Let's hope he can stay fit & provide inspiring leadership throughout 2014. Especially mid season when motivation might be really tough.

He is right to speak of the virtues of being a one-club player (unless driven out against your will like NDS)

I don't think he was specifically having a go at BJ, but by implication he was.
BJ will find in 10 years time long after he has retired
- his reception at StKilda functions would only be luke warm
- and Essendon people will never fully embrace him either

Dont agree at all but the reception will be luke warm. Most supporters eventually realise its a business and forgive. Only very few hold grudges.

Agree Plugger. He will be welcomed back warmly by the vast majority. Gave his all to our club.

So Rooey hasn't given up playing in a premiership for the Saints.

Goody, does that mean he'll play to 40? Imagine how dodgy his knees will be in 8 years time!

Roo has been a great leader (on field)
If I was CEO I would ask Roo to embrace Seaford (at least publicly)

Not a good look promoting us as the Bayside club when players like Roo complain
about the travelling time from Brighton to Seaford.

Some of our younger (hopefully next premiership players) are living in the Seaford area.

Time to embrace the concept of Saints of Bayside rather than the Moorabbin Saints.

Being a one club player when a portion of that saw you as amongst the highest paid players in the AFL...is vastly different IMO.

You can't really compare.

I still don't understand why opposition supporters always give him the raspberry. He is the fairest player you'll ever see on a footy field and a great player at that. It'd be nice to think that he'll win a great deal of respect from AFL fans in general before his career is out.

What a crock of horse crap. Buddy could have been the highest paid player at Hawthorn but chose to move to a club that paid him a further 30% more. Roo could have got the same sort of contract at Gold Coast but chosen stay with us for far less. Yes he was our highest paid player but he would have got much more at almost any other club if he chose to whore himself out like others have.

Sometimes its best just not to say anything if you don't agree, because your ignorance is showing.

He deserved to be highly paid, and that would've been doubled by any other Club that could've got him.

He is one of the best players ever to walk into our Club and that will always be.

A Club legend he definitely is.

I never said he wasn't a legend, never said he didn't have the potential to earn more, never said he didn't deserve it.

I million a year is pretty comfortable though.

My argument is that it's not fair to compare someone living on those earnings to someone leaving to perhaps try and achieve half of that.

Is your point that it is easier to stay a "one club player" when you are being paid extremely well? If true, BJ would have as well, but chose to leave.

Roo will go down as one of our best ever players, if not the best. A true loyal Saints superstar. BJ gave his heart and soul for us as well but chose to leave. He's an Essendon player. I'll support the bloke still wearing the red, WHITE and black every time.

Some of our greatest champions (even legends) have left the Club (for various reasons including more money)
Stewart, Ditterich, Plugger, Winmar
to name just 4.

They still remain champions and/or legends of our Club in my eyes

Others chose to remain as 1 Club players
Baldock, Barker, Harvey, Loewe, Burke
to name just 5.

Why those that left chose to leave is entirely up to them.
It doesn't diminish their careers in my eyes.

I for one will not forget BJ's or NDSs contribution to St Kilda and will welcome them back when they do eventually return.

As for Roo - he is simply the best tall forward (other than Plugger) I've seen at St Kilda.
A champion and future legend of our Club.

Great post MM. I also understand K's point too, Nick has at times been in the top few paid players in the comp, deservedly so too, but it does make it easier to stay a one club player.

i must say it is great to see our captain fantastic looking like he is enjoying footy again ... gone is the steely deep serious concentration grimace that was on his face during the 2008-2012 period and now is a more smiley and happy looking Nick .. prime example is the AFL captains "selfie" huge smile on our champ ...

as for guys like BJ i know i for one will give the man a standing ovation when he eventually returns to the club .. Bj was a champion of our club and a true clubman til the end , his move to Essendon was in the best interest for himself and the St Kilda football club . im of the firm belief the if the club did not have the carrot of the first round compo pick waved in front of them then BJ would have stayed , in my opinion we deserted him as much as he deserted us .... he and NDS will eventually find themselves elevated to legend status at our club and like Plugger when he returned will be greated with the highest admiration ....

to that i would also welcome Luke Ball back with open arms .. these guys are a huge peice of St Kilda history regardless of how or where they ended their playing days

Absolutely.

BJ is a life-long St Kilda legend, who I would welcome back to the club in a heartbeat as a player or fan.

Same for Luke Ball and Nick Dal Santo. Absolute champions of our footy club who bled for the cause. Never turned their back on us or spat in our faces. All respected our club to the end.

Heck, it would be like saying Big Carl, Ian Stewart or Tony Lockett weren't champions of our club. We're a bit pedantic about that sometimes.

Let's hope they pop out a few sons, who get to contribute to our eighth flag, 25 years from now.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
