Great athlete but might not have the cognitive spatial awareness and reaction skills to play AFL footy. No shame in that. Not many do.
Can be learned/improved to some extent and I'm sure they are working on it - the question is will he learn/improve quick enough to make a go of his career? Jury well and truly out.
If he was 5'10 and medium paced he would never got out of c grade footy. But clubs have persisted because of his obvious physical and athletic prowess and size in the hope the other stuff can be learned.
It takes quite a collection of physical and mental attributes to make it as an AFL footy player. Especially an alpha key fwd.
I'm not sure anyone sees him as an Alpha forward. He's a leigh Brown type Forward/ruck. Definitely being 5'10" he would be lucky to have got out of suburban footy but same with plenty of others. He should be compared to Josh Fraser and Matthew Kruizer more than Lockett or Dunstall that way a bit more perspective might be gained.

Couldn't agree more. Or Zac Clarke (at best) or a Shaun Hampson (at worst).
I certainly dont see him as an Alpha fwd - but some on here are still thinking/hoping/praying that he magically metamorphs into one.

There is no comparison as players. Obviously Loewe would be handy for advice as he is a 300 game great.
Richmond appointed Stewie as a Rucking specialist coach in 2002 after a similar offer from Grant Thomas.
Stewie had a total of 1572 career Hit Outs, most coming from his last 6 years, however he did some rucking earlier on in his career as well.
He's rucked more than you think. I still think he'd make a good coach for Stanley, but thats never going to happen. (unfortunately)

He really needs to be physically challenged on the training track to get him making a physical contest every time he goes near the ball. If that means bringing in some cannon fodder to contest against, then so be it but he needs to make contact a natural part of his game. Until then he will run around like a timid Under 12 player playing against people who might hurt him!

I dont think the club will be upset with Rhys stats or marks etc - but they probably weren't pleased with the times where he pulled out of the contest, ran around the contest or completely avoided the contest when it was his turn to go. he didnt have to do anything special or even win the contest just make an effort to neutralise it or attempt to be involved in it.
The opposition just attacked the ball unopposed like a training session. In fact half of our games this year the opposition side has treated us like a training drill.
I think Rhys needs to get his first efforts up to scratch before he even worries about 2nd efforts.
If the ball comes within 5 metres of you - generally you need to go for it.
You cant just hope it gets cleared out of your area.
The game also showed the value of a player such as him who can play the relief ruck role well.
Needs to be left playing the role for the rest of the year to build his experience.
This year is all about building the future, and he has a future. May not be our best player, but as a minimum he can fill a very useful role, As a max he could still be a star .
He may be anywhere in between.
However guys that can take contested marks in the forward line have a vale beyond their raw stats. Add in his versatility a forward/ruck and he is worth a spot in our 22.
If we do get a young gun in this years draft, he will have an easier time of it in 2/3 tears time when Roo is gone if he has another big forward like Rhys to play alongside.

Sounds like Rhys may have lifted his intensity and work rate yesterday. Will be interesting to see if he can play out the rest of the season to the extent that he can hold his head reasonably high.
