The AFL will radically restructure the development of young football talent across Australia with the creation of club-zoned multicultural and Indigenous academies.
In a move that has been viewed as a precursor to the return of club-branded development zones, the competition is expected to allocate a significant portion of the 2017-2022 broadcast rights money in a bid to attract under-represented talented boys into the game.
St Kilda are expected to develop talent in a region ranging from the Dandenongs to the Mornington Peninsula.
Good in theory and would work great if there was lots of migration from a country of tall people like Holland but I can't see too many Chinese and Indians playing our game - genetically they aren't really tall enough.

There should not be a need for an "Academy" system if junior development is running appropriately in each state.
National carnivals and the like of course. But the difference in skill depth in the northern states will always be the issue.
Clubs need to be involved, however when it comes to the draft, in MY opinion the current bidding system for academy players just compromises the draft.
Perhaps the Victorian clubs need to be allocated a pool of players to assist with similar development programs such as Sydney and Brisbane, but that should be done without any potential draft priority.

When I grew up in Bentleigh, within walking distance of the Moorabbin ground, I was in territory zoned to Melbourne.

Collingwood could be given an academy that only takes in mentally retarded kids and kids with poor dental care.
Oh nearly forgot and kids with criminal records from Broadmeadows and Thomastown.

I suppose its another step in trying to get back some sense of connections with the local area the clubs come from after its all become so sanitised and generic. But it relies heavily on AFL zoning it fairly and I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.
Interesting that the Bulldogs will get our old zone of Ballarat.
We had a real mix of quality with our players from Ballarat. From Champions of the game to those that weren't really
VFL standard. Collectively, they won us more than our fair share of Spoons.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
