To celebrate diversity in the community the two competing team could try a number of things .

the two teams could enter the arena coming out of a big closet .
Umpires to wear arseless chaps .
watercarriers to also carry glitter .

All things to be done of course in the best possible taste .

I think this post actually sums up why diversity games like this have become a thing...

Glad to have the game. Statistically there would be several footballers in the league fearing public reaction of them getting outed. Happy we show support to this community.

I rarely listen to SEN these days, but Matt Finnis is proving to be one of best club CEOs in recent time.

St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis sees the club’s involvement in the AFL’s inaugural Pride Game as an opportunity to celebrate inclusion and to help create an environment where people are comfortable being open about their sexuality.

In Round 21, St Kilda will host the first game of its kind when the Saints play Sydney at Etihad Stadium on August 13.

On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), Finnis said the Saints were trying to promote attitudinal change in society.

“We think it’s an important opportunity, not just to try and stamp out homophobia but to also really celebrate diversity,” Finnis told SEN Breakfast on Tuesday morning.

St Kilda chief executive Matt Finnis has strongly denied a report that AFL clubs are intent on blocking the players from receiving a set percentage of the AFL’s revenue in the upcoming collective bargaining agreement.

The former head of the AFL Players Association refuted the claim in The Australian by Patrick Smith that the club CEOs will not ‘indulge the players and allow them a percentage of the revenue’.

Smith outlined that officials had confirmed clubs were prepared to enter messy and hostile negotiations, which could lead to the players considering a strike if their request is not met.

“Yeah I’m not sure where that came from because I was at the entirety of that CEOs conference last week and I don’t remember being asked to put my hand in the air,” said Finnis on SEN radio.

“In fact, there wasn’t a whole lot of debate on that particular issue I’ve got to say.

“So, I think the clubs are happy for the AFL to continue to lead those negotiations.

I'd prefer the club focussing on winning games of footy and not worrying about side issues.

Maddy's match aside. Worry about opposition, not society politics

That line of thinking resulted us in turning our backs on Tassie, and that was a big mistake.

It is a gimmick but it's also a marketing tool for the club that if used correctly, i think could open some doors in terms of members, sponsors, exposure etc.

I hope we really run with it and that we make this our thing. Mardi gra weekend, play with a pink jumper etc... I think there are some serious possibilities here.

1As I wrote earlier ... forget about this so called 'pride match' for round 20. This week let's bring back some 'fan' pride ... by playing 4 weeks of consistent football. Let's play with pride with wins against bottom teams Essendon and Freo - and Carlton. I can take a loss in Adelaide - but not another 100 point beating like the weekend. So I'd be forgetting about 'Political Pride' matches with Sydney (Round 21) and concentrate on a bit of play that will make the supporters 'proud' (like v North). PS As Sam Newman said ... "what's next an Anglo-Saxon heterosexual Pride match?"

Zachary, the only pride we should be interested in is pride of our team performance!

Some bizarre comments in this thread.

Do people think Collingwood and Essendon should stop worrying about honouring the ANZACs and focus on winning the game?

Maybe St Kilda and Hawthorn should stop worrying about murdered policemen and just get the four points?

Should Carlton and Collingwood forget about those cancer sufferers and just get on with it?

Maybe Melbourne lost to the dogs on Sunday because they were too focused on raising money for breast cancer research?

Society moves on, the football commmunity moves with it, but sadly there's many narrow minded individuals left behind.

On what basis? He might be but how would we know. On any objective measure, he's done what? Not winning, membership crap, making losses and increasing debt. Speaks okay in media though.

...or the LBGT Challenge? Or to honour one of our own, the Meldrum Cup? You could get Molly to toss the coin, but I'm concerned he'd faint as he did when Barry Breen kicked that point in '66 or when he met John Lennon. So we better not go there, last thing we need is a pre game delay whilst the coin tosser is strechered off.

Good luck leading your life if you take ethical validation from Sam Newman the guy is so out of touch with modern societal values it's ridiculous...
