Official Draft Order & Points

Post: # 1641175Post ace »

Expect the AFL to update once they process each trade.
However there could be some time elapse between trades being announced and the AFL processing.

St Kilda has picks
10 (1395pts)
47 (316pts)
65 (90 pts)
83 (0pts)
101 (0pts)
Total points = 1801
We traded pick 29 (653pts) for Nathan Freeman

Gold coast have some serious coin to spend this trade / draft.
4 (2034pts)
8 (1551pts)
22 (845pts)
23 (815pts)
25 (756pts)
28 (677pts)
41 (412pts)
59 (158pts)
Total 7248 points
A little than 4 times St Kilda

If you want to sell players to improve your draft picks you need to deal with Gold Coast.

all their good players keep leaving... not a particularly great trade strategy really
They will also get pick 6 from Richmond, presumably and also a teens pick from the Hawks plus some

Given the concensus that the draft is even from pick 5 or 6 to 30 ... Could we be looking at swapping 10 and a player to Gold Coast for 3 picks in the 20s? 22, 23 and 25. Not 28 as with academy kids that will become a 30+.

Leaves Gold Coast with 4, 8 and 10 with possibility of 6 traded too for Prestia.

They will take players from Hawthorn for O'Meara.

4 top 10 picks plus 2 players from Hawthorn and 1 from St Kilda will regenerate their list.

It looks like Gold Coast will have 4 1st round picks. Maybe a player from us for their last couple of picks, 41 and 59. Or better yet, 25 or 28 and 41. (59 is 6 positions before our 3rd pick)

Don't understand the points system .
I'm a simple person and since it and free agency has come in , I've seen no benefit to our club .
Is this because i'm a simple person .

Points only matter if you have an academy or father-son, or if the club you're trading with has those.

Otherwise the pick is what you are concerned with, and who will be left.

For us this year don't worry about it imo.

I don't really care about regenerating the GCS list much, but I'm not sold on the value of trading high picks for multiple lower picks, though I thought it was good at the time.

In 2012 trading picks 12 & 13 we ended up with Hickey, Lee, Wright, White, Murdoch, Saunders.

We will be lucky to end up with one long term player out of six in that trade/draft… Hickey is looking solid but we could have just as easily had Grundy and a key back from that draft period.

Just to be clear - S White. Not B White. To cut a long story short we gave pick 12 and 13 for Hickey and Nate Wright. So a loss for us but not a huge loss. East to see how you could make a mistake on Brodie Murdoch. Ticks every box on paper just struggles to actually get the ball.

12 & 13 no guarantees. You'd take hickey in a heartbeat from one of those.

Surely no-one thinks I am talking about B White in 2012?

We gave up picks 12 & 13 (being Goddard) and ended up with one player despite the spiel of an even draft and minimizing risk…

I don't want to be a hindsight hero but… at the end of the day, Grundy went at 18 and players we have looked at since in Jaksch & Corr went before Wright & White. Maybe we wouldn't be looking at re-contracting a 34 year old s fisher if we had just used 12 & 13 in the first place.

The points system has simply helped our rivals to gain father-son and academy players on the cheap.
It has only helped us to get Bailey Rice.
It simply enables NSW and QLD clubs to get their states best players on the cheap but enabling the AFL to pretend that it is fair.

What it does is enable the NSW and QLD clubs to know years in advance that they will priority access to certain players.
They can then put extra effort over a number of years into coaching those junior players.
The AFL pretends that other clubs can bid for these players but they have nowhere near the same knowledge on the player.
Clubs are reluctant to bid because when they do bid for one of these players they get trumped anyhow.
The player they then select next knows that he was not his clubs preferred choice.

The other feature of the points system is it gives a rough value to each draft pick because the points for each pick are based on years of historical statistical data.

They got Wells and Mayne for free.
Both free agents but they are definitely going to have to off load a cool million in salary cap to include them.
Cloke has got to go.
The Bulldogs know this so will offer pick 3098 to Collingwood.
