Also probably means the end for the club all time great Sammy Fisher.

Still building a list is building a list and you need back up in all positions.
well he has had a far better career than Delany... the proof is in the pudding... twice as many games played at same age

Agreed, not a lot of difference in style but Brown has shown over a large number of years that he can handle KPFs at AFL level.

Agreed though it is just like for like upgrade on Delany which is not a monumental upgrade. But delany is right near the border of AFL quality... Brown has shown that he is AFL quality

The only cost is to delist Delany and list Brown instead...
Considering we have struggled for big KPDs, that seems a worthy action to take

Brown's management approached the Saints last week, and he has signed a two-year deal. The deal is not a big one, meaning Collingwood may not receive any compensation for him.

St Kilda are not looking to also recruit Brown's twin Mitch, who is looking to move from West Coast to a Melbourne club.
The club must now make a decision on whether to retain veteran Sam Fisher, one of five players out of contract at the club.

"Nathan is a handy acquisition for the club and will obviously strengthen our defence," said St Kilda chief operations officer Ameet Bains.

"Bringing Nathan in as a free agent also allows us to fill a key need without compromising our overall trade position; an important consideration given the trades we have completed during this exchange period.

"His ability to hold down a key defensive post makes him an attractive prospect for where our list is currently placed.

"In addition to his experience and leadership on the field, Nathan is a terrific person off the field and we look forward to him joining our ranks."

Brown follows GWS midfielder Jack Steele into the club, with the Saints also set to trade in Western Bulldog Koby Stevens.

The 27-year-old played 130 games for Collingwood since being a top 10 draft pick in 2006, and was part of the 2010 premiership side.

Ironically, the Saints had all but secured Mitch Brown in the 2012 trade period when a three-club deal involving West Coast and Essendon fell through.

Remember Delaney was 5th in our 2014 B & F and is only 27 still.
Brown finished 8th in 2015 for Pies.

Brown had a decent enough 2016 with 5 good AFL games and some time in the VFL.

Brown probably an upgrade on Delaney but not hugely so. If Dempster had gone down then Delaney probably would have got more games.

Both are big and good one on ones against gorillas but both arent real good on the modern rebound footy.

Dont see it as a win for us.

THE FOLLOWING IS WRONG

As a consequence of Collingwood failing to match St Kilda's offer to Nathan Brown, Collingwood will receive a free agency compensation pick.

We will have to wait until Monday to find out what that pick is but it will cause a lot of draft picks to slip one place.
If it is a mid 2nd round compensation pick then our pick 36 slip to 37 and 50 slips to 51.
If it is an end of round 2 / start of round 3 compensation pick then only our pick 50 slips to 51

Don't think Pies get a pick for him as they got Mayne and Wells in as free agents?

Hardly topping up. Though yes should improve our finals chances in 2017.

Brown cost nothing pickwise.
Stevens will be for a pick that we would not use.
Both players is ares of need for the club at present- KPD and midfield

We have traded for more earlier picks to be used for quality kids or good young players from other clubs (Trades are yet to finish)
Our only reasonably early pick traded for a player has gone on Steele who is an excellent long-term pick up.

We have added yes some experienced depth that will help competition for spots. But both could well play a while yet. But we have also importantly we have strengthened the amount of quality young players that will join us in 16/17. Good chance still too that we can possibly trade into the top 5/8.

Pretty happy with this. As others have pointed out, we didn't give up anything to get him, which is critical. We also need help transitioning from Chips/Dempster to Goddard/Carlisle. Brown fits the bill there.

Obviously he had big injury problems but always showed he could play when he could get out there.

Would be surprised if he played too far past 30, although that would be fantastic if we could extract 5+ years out of him. It seems as though our window will probably come in that time.

The best way to look at this is to ask whether you would prefer Luke Delaney or Nathan Brown. Fairly straight up decision there.

Bluthy wrote:Crikey! Anyone think we aren't in top up mode anymore? Yep we are going for the chocolates - it just got real in here. And seeing as we have gone defcon 1 at a flag tilt, I can see the sense in this. With Goddard not sure when he'll be back, Brown can play on the number 1 gorilla forward (like Hawkins) and that lets Carlisle be more of an attacking weapon from the back with his strong intercept marking.

But lets not pretend there isn't a cost here. Playing Brown comes at the potential cost of the development of Goddard, Coughlan, Lee (if he stays on the list), White, Rice maybe even someone like Roberton who could have stepped up in responsibility but will probably have to defer to Dempster again this year. Plus Brown's kicking from what I've seen is not great. If we have Brown, Dempster, Geary, Gilbert all playing together that's some pretty ordinary kickers in the back half. Puts a lot of strain on Joey, Carlisle, Savage, Webster etc to be able to create play from the back. Teams are very good at isolating the bad kicks to cause turnovers (refer Dawson)

Not sure where White fits in now - might be played on the wing to get him into the team sometimes. I was hoping to see White and Rice both play a bit this year as they are good distributors from the back that we need but that may be delayed.

It's a gutsy move in some ways going for a 27 y.o injury ridden player. I'm still worried we are moving too quick without the necessary skilled talent but if he can pull off a flag this way Richo will be a genius and I will bow down to his wisdom in great humbleness. Interesting times.
he has played a 33 out of his last 44 games.

16 games in 2016
21 games in 2015
3 games in 2014
22 games in 2013

not that injury riddled

CORRECT

From AFL Record Season 2016 page 380 under heading of FREE AGENCY paragraph 4, sentences 3 & 4 read
"Compensation in the form of AFL allocated draft picks apply to clubs with a net loss of free agents.
This is based on a formula determined by the AFL."

Collingwood having imported 2 free agents will have a net gain of free agents and so get NO COMPENSATION.

Whoopee
Take that Eddie.
We swiped one your players and you get no compensation.
Remember Luke Ball do you Eddie.

Great Karma for Luke Ball, this guy has been Playong regularly for 2 years you can't compare him to Delaney.

It's amazing the amount of supporters who confuse Nathan's playing career with his brother's. Mitch is injury prone. Nathan isn't.

How exactly does getting Brown in to play on the monster forwards hurt Brandon White's development?

Hugh is going to need most of 2017 to build back up to where he was before the injury (and he was a long way being physically mature enough when he got hurt). Coughlan is a 3rd tall & is a rookie. He'll continue to develop at Sandy. Lee has had his chances & is most likely gone.

No matter what the club does some supporters will find something to criticise...

At worst Brown is a massive upgrade on Delaney. At best he allows Shinner & Carlisle to play their natural games.

If you look at his stats his last two years have been his best.
I remember watching him in a couple off matches at the end of the season ( being a Ballarat boy, I usually keep an eye on them) and he had some really good consistent games.
Hasn't been injured lately and maybe just getting to his best now, who knows we may get 3 or 4 years out of him.

From the AFL trade blog
Confirmation from the AFL that the Magpies will receive no compensatory draft selection for losing defender Nathan Brown to St Kilda based on Brown's age (27) and the contract offer from the Saints.
Great news that the filth get nothing.

Do we Rookie Fisher or thank him for his services. Personally id give him a rookie spot. Allows us deep cover, gets him in a mentor role for the younger players like White, Goddard etc, then eventually into coaching which i hear he is interested in.

I don't believe it is high....and indeed it is on the low side (unfortunately I can't remember now who idiicated that).

According to Bain's Brown's Manager contacted us only a week ago and that we had not saught him out. Is I believe only 2 years too.

Heard on the radio he was getting $350 to $400k.

I like that he sought us out. Shows confidence and a desire. He will still have to prove himself and he knows it.

The easy option would have been to stay at Collingwood knowing Frost was leaving, guaranteed games, salary on the table, familiar environment etc...

Think this is another blow for Buckley along with all the others. THE EXODUS. Good thing they brought in Jesse White (laugh out loud).

Can someone please risk the filth pages and report back? Is no one brave enough? Don't look at me.
