2001 super draft podcast

Post: # 1648324Post BigMart »

Not sure if anyone has listened to them?

Quite interesting

On Ball, Judd and Hodge

Judd was seen by the others (Ball, Hodge) and most other players as the superior player by far, but was a year older. Judd did not attend the draft camp due to injury. Hodge tested terribly because he had OP.

Judd offended GT when he asked him in interview what he thought about StK as a club, and Judd replied honestly that they were going terrible (2001) and had a poor history with only one flag in 100 years.

He was however, very willing to got to StK, in fact was keen to go to them.

Judd also told WC (Worsfold) he did not want to go to Perth.

Hawthorn settled on Hodge a fair way out, just needed a Med clearance. Which can from 9 doctors, 3 of which did not clear him and suggested they not draft him.

Ball was always going to stay in school, was physically not ready for AFL anyway.

Hawthorns, and most recruiters had Judd and Hodge a bit ahead of Bally, and we're very surprised JB went for Luke B... Hawthorn never considered Ball.

Jimmy Bartel was a clear stand out for Vic Country and was an All Australian in his u17 and u18 years. A bargain at pick 8 for Geelong and a Joke he was overlooked for Xavier Clarke, David Hale and to a lesser extent the exciting Sampi He, like Joel Selwood, Buddy, Jack R, Jack D and so many other 'sliders' who are overlooked because recruiters focus too much on reasons why not and probably forget the obvious - are they the best players. Jack Riewoldt being overlooked by us was inexcusable!

Our recruiters, JB over the years in particular often reach too much, and recruit in hope, rather than take the safe bet. Trying to project is hard enough, doing it on gut feel because you think a player might become good is dangerous IMO - when taking high picks.
Just pick the ones who have proven their ability.

Anyway, interesting podcast... There was many more points and a lot can be concluded now in hindsight. What we can safely say is that Geelong (8, 17, 23, 24, 41) Hawthorn (1, 16, 20, 32, 36) and StK (2, 5, 13, 21, 37, 49)

Had the biggest hands in the 'Super Draft'

Geelong and Hawthorn the big winners

StK drafted OK but one better decision IMO and things are different

We had a selection just before Judd, Before Bartel, Before Stevie J, Just before Swan

Wow

Ouch

Yes that draft set Hawthorn and Geelong up for multiple flags.
For us it was wasted opportunities.

Ball and Clark. Honestly a failure. Could have been Judd and Bartel. 3 flags by now. Oh well.
