Leadership Group 2017

Jarryn Geary has already been internally announced and unveiled as the Saints’ new captain, with the 28-year-old addressing the playing group in recent days. He replaces veteran Nick Riewoldt, who was at the helm for 220 games across 11 seasons.

Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna and Sean Dempster have stepped away from official leadership positions, while foxfooty.com.au can reveal that Seb Ross will be handed a leadership role in 2017.

Ross, 23, will join Geary, Jack Newnes, Jack Steven, David Armitage and Maverick Weller in a youthful leadership team that will be aiming to drive St Kilda towards finals for the first time since 2011.

The footy news cycle is just insane. You get regular announcements from rumour, unofficial decison, officially unofficial, officially unofficial, unofficially internally confirmed, officially internally confirmed...you know what, I'll just be old fashioned and wait for the club to make its OFFICIAL announcement and then give my dues.

NEW St Kilda captain Jarryn Geary has declared the youthful Saints are ready to deliver a drought-breaking finals berth.

After 11 seasons under superstar skipper Nick Riewoldt, Geary on Tuesday was ordained as the club’s new captain.

He will head a revamped leadership group with new faces Seb Ross, 23, Josh Bruce, 24, and Dylan Roberton, 25.

It represents one of the biggest leadership changes in the club’s history and brings to an end a three-year search for Riewoldt’s successor.

JARRYN Geary says he will always shift uneasily when he looks at the roll call of St Kilda captains.

The hard-nosed small defender joins some icons Nick Riewoldt, Robert Harvey and Trevor Barker as Saints skippers, knowing their individual on-field brilliance will always outweigh his own.

“When you reel off names like that, and put yourself alongside them, it’s never going to sit comfortably with me,” Geary said.

“I will be feeling overwhelmed by that part of it for a long period of time.”

It’s a level of humility and modesty that has made the shut-down backman one of the Saints’ most popular and respected teammates, as the club navigated a full list rebuild and tricky transition period from 2011.

But what the 28-year-old may lack in profile, for now, or flashiness on the field, Geary tries to make up for with his unwavering dedication and steel-edge competitiveness.

From Bendigo, the former rookie laughed that he barely made enough money in his first few seasons to do much more than eat, sleep and train

Basically no surprises at all.

The only one possibly border line inclusion is Bruce but he was always going to be very close.

The rest = as expected.

Great group though. We are choc a block with young leaders. Holds us in good stead for the next 5 years at least.

Joey Montagna not being there, as well as Shinner, are good moves because it frees them up to concentrate on their own preparation rather than assisting the younger ones.
I understand "leadership" might include some favours like collecting a young recruit for training, if he has no car;
sitting down with young recruits for a coffee and assisting them, etc, giving constructive feedback, things like that.
So...without any extra workload of leadership and mentoring,
Monty and Shinner can give themselves the best chances of recovery from a game, and being ready for the next...without the leadership burden.

They guys like Robbo are seen as the obvious future and this empowers them and lets them take ownership.
Mav is already a leader, obviously.
I like this group and that's my take on the thinking behind it.
Just IMHO

Exactly - but what's great about this move is that I don't reckon Joey/Shinner/Roo/Gilbo would shy away from doing any of that, if required.
They'll also be there to help solidify the new leadership group.
A great space to be in, Leadership-wise!

Jumper looks better with the white trim. More traditional.

Looks good. Would love them to make the club logo bigger again but I don't think the AFL lets them. Is the away jumper going to be the same as last season?

Interesting. I don't mind the hot cross bun. Reminds me of the '97 season and Aussie Jones bursting down the wings at Waverley...

Our best jumper, ever, IMHO. Maybe the memories of the 97 GF are still too painful.

It was a good guernsey, but not as good as the one worn in 1966!

Sainternist it's a pity those thieving Collywobbles players liked that 1966 Saints jumper so much that they took them off Saints players backs. - all except Ian Synman, he was too big and strong for them to rip his off his back!

I agree 100%.

I loved that jumper.

It had style and oozed class.

Best looking jumper in the competition by far.

I was terribly dissappointed when it was ditched.
