A true servant and top bloke. The type of individual that every club needs. He has had a successful career.

Probably would have been finished last season had it not been for the master stroke of playing him in the Ruck.
Got him an extra year IMO.

Re: Sammy is the oldest listed saints player
He suddenly became relevant againast hear. He now looms as an important part of the team.
"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

He actually rucks better than Blakey, from memory.Con Gorozidis wrote:Probably would have been finished last season had it not been for the master stroke of playing him in the Ruck.

Incredible second efforts.
It keeps Bruce away from ruck and Bruce's game always suffers when he rucks.
So Gilbo rucking helps in 2 ways.

Gilbo pinched hit in the ruck for the first time 3 or 4 times last year and all of a sudden he's better than Jason Blake who played the same role effectively for a decade and nearly helped us pinch a flag in 2010.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Blake in the ruck more of a GT thing?SaintPav wrote:Gilbo pinched hit in the ruck for the first time 3 or 4 times last year and all of a sudden he's better than Jason Blake who played the same role effectively for a decade and nearly helped us pinch a flag in 2010.

I feel like under RL Blake fell more into a key back role whereas before then he was more utility.

An interview with Blakey once, he said that he's like 'Selleys' e.g. gap fillerskeptic wrote:Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Blake in the ruck more of a GT thing?SaintPav wrote:Gilbo pinched hit in the ruck for the first time 3 or 4 times last year and all of a sudden he's better than Jason Blake who played the same role effectively for a decade and nearly helped us pinch a flag in 2010.

He did it on and off over his career but more off than on under Lyon.skeptic wrote:Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Blake in the ruck more of a GT thing?SaintPav wrote:Gilbo pinched hit in the ruck for the first time 3 or 4 times last year and all of a sudden he's better than Jason Blake who played the same role effectively for a decade and nearly helped us pinch a flag in 2010.

Two games stood out which were both under Lyon: 2008 game against Hawthorn where he kicked 3 goals playing ruck and turned the game in the 3rd quarter; and his second half performance in the 2010 GF draw.
Gilbert hasn’t done it as efffectvley or for as long.

I remember that Hawthorn game. I was there and it led me to hope against hope that we could pull off that upset in the pre-lim that season.

Sam is all set to play the relief ruck role again. What a champ of a guy. Gives 129% always.
