Weller and Wright are now officially in the list clogger category.
Wright is 24 and Weller 26.
I can't see anything to be gained by gifting them more senior games. Both have had plenty of opportunities.
Would much prefer to see us get games in to Coffield, Clark, Paton and even Connellan.

Re: Starting 22 2018 what we'll see/ what you'd like to see.
So after last nights match!
One week at a time... not sure we can handle two talls in front half plus Skunk.
B: Geary - Bruce - Webster
HB: Savage - Carslile - Roberton
C: Acres - Ross - Newness
HF: Billings - Membrey - Gresham
F: Sinclair - Mc Cartin - Clark
R: Longer - Steele - Steven
INT: Dunstan - Gilbert - Armitage - Coffield
EMG: Marshall - Long -
Liked:
Marshall's last 1/4 - he has got something, Armo's return, Clark and Coffield showed the class to back up being top 10 picks.
Paddy showed a bit but dropped a couple of sitters, Jack Steven hasn't lost any zip, Savage followed on from last seasons late solid form.
Disliked:
Wright is not an AFL standard footballer, Mav looked ordinary, Webster looked cumbersome and slow.
Brown looked very slow, field kicking poor. Tackles were not sticking.

Newnes would be one of our first picked, every week.Con Gorozidis wrote:Is Newnes still a walk up start?
One of our most under-rated players - and I’m surprised by that.
Do a footywire comparison of Newnes against any of our other players, and you’ll see he is in the top quartile in possessions, metres gained and kicking efficiency.

He's a rebounder - 9th in contested possessions, 3rd in uncontested. But woeful disposal - 4th in turnovers, 4th in clangers.

4th in turnovers/clangers --- Billings has the same amount of clangers/turnovers as Newnes --- the 4 clangers per game might be a result of long driving kicks (see metres gained stat) and some might miss the target - but what about the ones that come off (the most)?

Re: Starting 22 2018 what we'll see/ what you'd like to see.
Why is it weird? .. he plays most of the game on a wing/half back - he spends little time in the actual centre of the ground (so he's never going to amass 30 possessions plus).dragit wrote:What a weird comparison, how does Longer stack up vs Lonie?
I'm not comparing the two as much as asking the question:what is Newnes doing so wrong?; why is he so under-rated?
We all rate Billings (and I'm not saying he's as good as Billings)- but why are we overlooking and slighting such a good, solid player?

I posted positives - his high ranking in uncontested, and mentioned his rebounding. You'd already mentioned his possessions and metres gained. Not knocking him, but your call on disposal efficiency was well off.samoht wrote:Desertsaints wrote ,,

I misunderstood re: uncontested (and rebounding), sorry. You did indeed post some positives.desertsaint wrote: I posted positives - his high ranking in uncontested, and mentioned his rebounding. But why was my call on disposal efficiency well off? .... relative to others, the guy kicks the ball long and gains a lot of metres for his team - 430 metres average per game over 22 games last year is elite - so the margin for error with his long kicking will accordingly be higher (he's adventurous with his kicks and doesn't just chip it 20 metres sideways or backwards just to get his efficiency up to 100%) - yet his disposal efficiency is still around 75%.
How was I exaggerating his disposal efficiency ?

'top quartile' - he isn't. that was all. he has his role and is obviously doing it. i too think he's one of the more stable inclusions in richo's eyes, but like most on our list he could do with a bit of improvement - be also lovely if he could shoot, and he certainly aint alone on that measure.samoht wrote:I misunderstood re: uncontested (and rebounding), sorry. B: Geary, Brown, Webster

HF: Billings, Bruce, Gresham
F: Membrey, McCartin, Clark
Foll: Longer, Stevens, Ross
Int: Armitage, Newness, Steele, Coffield
Emerg: Weller, Gilbert, White/Rice
I think they need a settled back 6 ( all good sides do). True to be second ruck and push acres as 3 marking target forward during that time.
Assuming Longer over Hickey and Marshall although this is the year one has to show they can become a top 5 ruck in the league.

After Carlton JLT we are crying out for a Tall, Mobile,Marking defender. Clavarino seems to have vanished, we need to put time into him as he could eventually fit the bill. Hopefully another Lever of the future

Just watched the replay. Newnes couldnt even find space in a ground contest against Kreuzer. Newnes is a good honest trier with great fitness and toughness. But that is all. Similar to Geary. A long way from being a gun player.Drake Huggins wrote:OUCH!desertsaint wrote:not disposal efficiency - 14th last year. 15th in centre clearances. 12th in stoppage clearances. 13th in general clearances. 15th in tackles.samoht wrote:Newnes would be one of our first picked, every week.Con Gorozidis wrote:Is Newnes still a walk up start?

Sadly newness is nothing more than a role player.
Yes he has metres gained because he bombs the ball long to no one.
Whether its our horrible bomb it inside 50 and hope something happens game plan or his lack of talent I'm not sure.
He hasn't taken his game to another level for the past 3 seasons you can't seriously say his best is better than a B.
