Petracca v Paddy put to rest

Post: # 1722620Post The Recruit »

With Petracca being dropped this week by Melbourne who, to avoid attention have used his dog bite and excuse for him not being in the team, and paddy’s really ‘positive’ game on Saturday...I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that Paddy was the right choice. He will be a very good player for us.

From all accounts and by no means is it a surprise, the ONLY reason Petracca was dropped this week was because of his selfish, arrogant attitude around the club. The coach and Christian just don’t get on and if he is being dropped by a team that is clearly struggling for form and supposedly in the ‘top 4’ window, his behaviour must be pretty bad..

It was a fact that Petacca failed his psych test at the saints...not just failed but really really failed.

Paddy is a leader, Pettraca for no better of a word is a flog.
Can’t see him at Melbourne beyond 020....so no mater how talented he is....no one needs a flog at their workplace.

It was always going to be close, and we saw early on what McCartin was capable of so if it came right down to it I can see why they'd pick Paddy for that reason alone. I don't know Petracca personally, so that's a piece of information I could never be sure about.

Circumstantial evidence your honour ( regarding whether the dog bite is not the real cause). You normally get a judgement on these things on who is the better draft pick at the the end of their careers. It's not a sprint- it's a marathon and I'd say that Petracca is still slightly in front. I think he's been a contributor to his teams' wins on more occasions than Paddy

I think the jury is taking mental notes, and if the prosecution has better spelling that would strenthen your argument ;)

I am a Paddy supporter, but must say Petracca is still a way ahead at this stage. He is a GOOD midfielder who can go forward, but has a fair way to go to reach A grade, if he ever does. I would be surprised if he has been dropped, probably is the dog bite.

A big forward like Paddy was always going to take longer to get going, and this has been magnified with the concussions. However, he is starting to show signs, and looking like the right choice, particularly as big forwards are very hard/expensive to find. I would love for him to get some Winmar delivery.

I guess we will not really know for another 5 years or so.

Let’s enjoy The Tractor’s problems plus Melbourne and Carlton’s failures.

Paddy is finally coming good, but needs to play out the full season first before we get too cocky

I'm not going to try adding anything in the Paddy vs petracca debate because I think it is still a little early
However I can remember the very same flog argument being raised a few years ago for the reason not going after dusty martin

Yep, was going to say the same thing about the Tigers trying to get rid of Dusty.

And I’m not buying the opening post, have a source for any of this? Paddy might become good but I still think Petracca was the right choice.

Aside from the fact they were picks 1 & 2 comparisons are moot given they are completely different players. A better comparison would be drawn with other key forwards taken high in the draft

There is no doubt petracca is a very good player and I think this attitude stuff is overplayed - from what I can see his on field attitude looks good and he is clearly a competitive beast...which is what you want

I just hope like hell paddy can continue to grow in confidence which is what a consistent run at it should do. We’ve seen a glimpses - let’s hope he builds from here

It doesn't really matter who picked who does it? We could go back in single every draft and say we should have picked him over him. You draft who you draft at the time thinking they're a better player or what is required for the needs of the list.

We got Paddy. They got Petrecca. Both clubs just need to make players out of them which they are.

Oh dear you'll get some posters on here flailing about with this thread!

Its far too early to call, although from day 1 I've supported taking Paddy at No.1 and still do. As I've posted before if we were already well stocked for key forwards, then Petracca would have been the one to take, but we weren't and you always take the key forwards if they're good. You build the spine first.

Whatever hindsight suggests, Paddy and Petracca were both rated as guns before that draft and were the undisputed 1 & 2. So we had to choose between the big forward and the midfielder/medium forward and made the decision that had to be made.

I don't know what's going on with Petracca at Melbourne, he did strike me as a bit of a rockstar and still does (they love those kind at Melbourne). Aside from that if you invest Pick 1 in a midfielder you want them to be the complete package. Petracca is a gun, but his kicking is far from elite, good, but not elite. Although there are similarities between him and Dustin Martin, Martin is elite by foot, so I very much doubt that Petracca will get anywhere near the level of Martin or say Ablett (jnr).

At the time of that draft, Petracca wasn't as higly rated as some midfilders previously drafted, such as O'Meara, Heeney, Coniglio and even Bryce Gibbs. He never struck me as the sort of silk you'd use Pick 1 on, instead of a kid who's highly rated as a key forward.

Then the Bulldogs abject lunacy in the Boyd recruitment drove the value of key forwards through the roof. So now we're in a position where we have to find an elite mid through trade, free agency or the draft. If we'd taken Petracca would we have a Dustin Martin or Josh Kelly? I don't think so, but we'd be hoping to get a quality key forward through trade, free agency or the draft. Good luck with that, a far bigger ask than finding a gun mid.

Scollop just wanted to see if anyone was paying attention (Scollop SMSed me just before he posted. Well-spotted, whiskers3614). He said there was also going to be another mistake with a possessive-apostrophe placed in the wrong spot - which you didn't notice.

Petracca still by an absolute mile.

McCartin was always a long way #2 that year; the Tom Boyd trade scared us.

However, I see things from Paddy that I like. The game doesn't suit key forwards any more, unless they're truly premium, but he can find a role.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Great phrase and sums up the Saints nicely and how we’re viewed.

Not so sure about the Petracca vs Paddy debate just yet, but I have seen a couple of things done by Petracca on the ground that would confirm the reservations held by various clubs prior to the draft. A grade w-anchor of the highest order.

We would have played Petracca in a back pocket

The thing about Paddy is that so far in 2018 he is healthy, he has been held goalless but also kicked 3 in a game.
Some would say his career before 2018 was very average...unfortunately in 2018 he is actually playing worse in almost every category of stats than his career average...
Season Career
Disposals 12 15 worse
Kicks 9 12 worse
Handballs 4 6 worse
Marks 6 10 worse
Goals 3 3
Goal Assists 3 2 better , important stat need goals!
Tackles 2 3 worse
Hitouts 0 0
Clearances 0 0
Clangers 3 7 better- this is good
Inside 50s 5 6 worse
Rebound 50s 0 1 worse
Supercoach 67 82 worse
AFL Fantasy 63 81 worse

I didn't want to do Petraccas because he's not a Saint and I dont give a sh!t about him.

I didn't want to do Petraccas because he's not a Saint and I dont give a sh!t about him.
He’s being asked to play as the sole key forward. No Riewoldt, no Bruce. Membrey underdone and undersized.

He’s copping the best key defender each week, so no surprises that he’s not tearing it up each week.

I think he’ll be okay, but personally I’d move Carlisle forward to give him a hand, at least until Bruce is back.

That would help our forward structure immensely, but would, of course leave a sizeable hole in defence.

Anyways, next week is the McCartin-Petracca Cup. Let’s hope Paddy shows a bit because I’ve had a gutful of Demon fans raving about how special “Tracccccc” is.

Put Paddy in any top team right now and he kicks 50-60 goals a season. Josh Kennedy would struggle to kick a score in our forward line at the moment.
