We are screwed. 2nd Pick isn't until early 4th round. Best be nailing that top 5 given our recent history.

Pick 3 & 57+ isn't going to get it done… we are going to have to get pretty creative this trade season & be prepared to lose some decent players.

Our trading last year buries the argument that our current malaise was expected by the club. We traded like a club thinking we were ready for contention. That second round pick will hurt us - we received pick 34 last year for what will be a low twenties this year.

If you believe what you read on this forum, we don't have any. Decent players, that is.

Why would we trade a good player to pick up a 2nd round pick that may or may not turn into a good player?? We have a few players on our list that would get us a 1st round pick (Steven, Carlisle) but any of the rest would get is a 2nd round at best. Even if it is a super draft history says that a 2nd round pick has about a 50% chance of turning into a decent player. We are better off looking at the trade and free agent market and make sure we nail our first pick. We have a very young list anyway

This
Some BIG names may have to be put up
To go forwards we may need to go backwards
Should’ve swallowed that pill 12 monthsxearlier
Many got caught up in the “we nearly made finals” tripe and ignored actual performances against good sides WHEN It mattered
We stumbled for all the reasons we are stumbling now
1. Game plan - forward 50 poor
2. Quality mids - lack thereof (Im talking Hayes quality)
3. Skill level - recruiting to many HBF who can’t kick/lack composure

The Age footy podcast was hinting that Weller may want to go to GC, who would we want from there, apart from the obvious?

I can't see Gold Coast giving up any sort of pick for a player that they delisted and is struggling to get a game in a bottom 4 side.

Mav wouldn't get a game for Gold Coast.

Mav was brilliant in the game against Giants. I was thinking to myself the coaches should probably use him sparingly and never play him 2 weeks in a row. I'd even go so far as to rest him from Sandy duties if need be and communicate to both the player and the fans that this is the best way to use Mav.

The way he crashes and bashes in AFL games and his impact for that particular game with GWS cannot be understated. He kicked truly for goal, he was ferocious in each contest and he made our boys walk taller I reckon. Play himfresh and his body will not be battered and bruised and he can get the best out of himself. It's radical but so what!

I don't mind that the coaches are getting games into the youth. That can only help us in the long term. You have to be creative to use players that can have an impact. I'd love to have Mav in our team if we were playing finals. He's perfect. Remeber when Leigh Matthews coached Brisbane to those premierships. Remember when Clarko recruited a fat overweight Stewie Dew and everyone laughed?

Do St Kilda have a guy looking at State Leagues for young guys that possibly won't make the cut in the National Draft. I'm talking about players who have an elite attribute but perhaps are very poor in certain other areas. Maybe a kid that is unfit and overweight and who eats too much fish and chips but can kick like a mule.

How many guys have had long careers after only getting a chance as rookies? Do the Saints have enough people scouting the suburban leagues for diamonds in the rough? And what is the fascination or urgency or need to have to have a second or third round pick? Why don't we focus on improving the young guys we have already drafted and maximise our resources on the existing list. If we sack Trout, I reckon spend the money on more scouts rather than a new guy who oversees the scouters

What a non story in the papers. We traded it to get into second round last year - Clavarino pick 34. Good thinking to bring it forward. Pick 20 odd would look good but it's going to change anything for 3/4 years if at all.

Need this wealth of selections like McKenzie, Goddard, Lonie, White, McCartin, Long, Battel and trades like Freeman, Austin to step up and perform.

White and Long now in seniors which is good.

Pick 25 next year isn't going to be the difference in the end.

Problem is our recruiters will probably double down and trade #3 for two top 20 picks and get a couple of good potential B-graders rather than grab one potential A grader saying we couldn't split the top 20 players, or take a B grader and a later first round pick for #3.

Maybe we'll trade our first rounder in 2019 for a second and third rounder in this draft?

Its been known for at least a couple of years that this years draft was going to be strong. So if anything we should have been loading up on early picks not giving them away.

We won't have pick 3 .
I think we will improve over the season , we just need to start kicking goals and our confidence will return. Then we'll finish up near the top eight.
If we continue to covert at 45% or whatever it is then we probably won't win another game and this could see us with pick 1.

i hope we get pick 3. heck we need it.
on current form our first win i'd be semi-confident about would be rnd 17, but carlton might have improved by then.

Nobody will know for another 10 years whether it was a strong draft or not.

How can you see a pick 19-36 will be any better this year than it was last year?

I am happy with our picks. Super drafts can be a bit misunderstood. Usually there is a high level of talent in the top 6 to 10 picks with the likely hood that most have the attributes to be stars and most become them. But after the top 10 it becomes just another draft. I am not expecting to do much this season and it will be a good year to finish in a low position. If we get a top 5 pick we must must must use it on an outside mid. We have enough young guys on our team so we can forgo other picks this time around.

As long as we do not trade this year's pick. Use it and look to 2020

Keep in mind that there will be live pick trading this year and there's a bunch of talls up the top of this draft. The King twins have been hyped up for a couple of years now as generational talents and the SA hype machine keeps comparing Lukosius to players like Riewoldt and Franklin. At this point, it looks like Sydney will have to match a top-5 bid for Blakey. I could see Gold Coast trying to get both Kings if Lynch leaves as a free agent. In that scenario, they'd have 2 top-10 picks, another pick in the top-20 and another in the top-30. Adelaide have two picks in the first thanks to the Lever trade and may want to build their future forward line around Lukosius. So, if we finish as low as we are now, there's plenty of room to move down a few spots, get an elite mid and pick up extra picks.

Yeah nah pleasing positive
