Should we re visit one Grant Thomas's ideas?

Post: # 1757081Post Bruce G McAbee »

Have a rotating captaincy where our young guys get thrown into a leadership role and see how they do.

Think of me long enough to make a memory.

Definitely. I've been reading Lenny's book and the way he describes his first few years sounds very much like the saints right now. Grant Thomas brought in the rotating captaincy to solve the leadership problem.

We should have done it three seasons ago while Roo could have added value to the young captains. It's almost too late now as we don't have strong enough leaders at the club.

I thought it was pretty stupid trying to wring the last drop of blood out of Roo- too focussed on one player as our barometer for too long.

I'm relieved on reading your message, I thought you were going to suggest taking them to the movies.

the guy was a genius
at the end of this season my gut was telling me a rotating multi captain would be perfect for us right now
There are NO clear standouts for the job - so its time to share the "burden" and sort through the chaff

Definitely a good idea. We had 5 or 6 blokes who were capable of captaincy back then. .
If the current players know they are expected to lead, then they will stand up.
Simplest innovation we could make.

Not a bad idea. I think Hannerbrey will be a vice captain too.

SHOULD WE FOCUS ON DEVELOPING LEADERS AND DEVELOPING PLAYERS WHO DO THE BASICS WELL

SHOULD WE BE INNOVATORS RATHER THAN FOLLOWERS

SHOULD WE JUDGE OUR COACHING STRUCTURE ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF EACH PLAYER

SHOULD WE PLAN FOR THE FUTURE AND HAVING A SUSTAINED TOP 8 TEAM WORTHY OF BEING A CONTENDER

From day dot when Scott Watters came in he was planning for the time after Roo. As soon as Richo came on board it was head in the sand stuff and no succession planning whatsoever...Shitehouse leadership from all those people in positions of power at St Kilda - including the Cho

Thomas also said Captains just “tossed the coin”
Then suggested his rotation idea as development...umm can’t have it both ways ...

Remember when he announced the rotations and leadership groups all the media had a Feild day thought it was stupid... within three years most sides then had leadership groups

One of GT's good legacy's

You mean midfield rotations rather than not fully utilising interchange?

That was another GT legacy.

He had some novel ideas

Hm. And interestingly, a leader is a dealer going backwards. But I expect it's different in French.
