Our only rookie pick at no 3
From North Adealide

43. CALLUM WILKIE

Defender, 191cm, 87kg, North Adelaide

Buckenara says: Wilkie is one of the SANFL’s top defenders and I really like the way he reads the football in flight to intercept mark. He matured over the pre-season this year and improved his fitness and leadership — he captained North Adelaide — which led to him having one of his best seasons where he won the club’s best and fairest in a premiership year. I believe a club with an immediate need for a tall intercept marking defender should look at Wilkie as he can provide excellent back-up as a mature-age recruit who’s ready to play in Round 1 if needed.

This for the 2014 draft where he was overlooked.

It looks like he's a nice field kick, so I'm not really sure if he'll fit in at St Kilda.

This is dead set a joke Simon, its a commonly used nickname with absolutely no demeaning implied.

Why don't you open up the thread for replies on your call of banning the use of a nickname, see how many people support this snap decision? Absurd stuff.

Most forward set ups have two genuine tall forwards, two medium talls, two small.
They need to be matched by defenders of at least equal height so as not to be out marked.
We often go in with an undersized defence.

Brown and Carlilse take the genuine talls although Brown could do with an extra 5cm.

Clavarino, Joyce & Austin are not quite genuine tall, they can take the shorter of three talls.
Yes we have a shortage of key talls.
But it is too soon for the club to admit every time Max and Ben chat on the phone Max will be telling Ben that mum's cooking is still as great as ever and guess who still does my washing.
Even pre-season although some days are hot, most days provide some heat relief.
A two year project.

Roberton takes one medium tall.
But Webster, Savage, McKenzie, Geary, Rice can realistically only man up a small forward but are often asked to man players taller than themselves.
We have a genuine surplus of this type of player
Coffield can take the fourth tallest - a medium tall but that is where Wilkie would fit in too.

Draft video has him playing forward. Might be a handy 3rd forward. Has a great kicking motion, hits targets and strong hands. Only 22 and might really benefit from AFL system.

We've got s surplus of key forwards so perhaps one or two could drop back.

I'd be telling Wilkie to model his game on 2010 Sam Fisher. Don't mind this selection at all, makes more sense than our other 3 mature recruits who were all just decent at state level.

Tall running defender or wing, isn't he? That's how he was used with the Roosters at least, definitely not as a KP defender.

Not big enough to play key defence but skills are good although the pressure of sanfl to AFL is a big leap. Looks a better left foot kick that Webster, Brown and Mckenzie. Saints defence was always under pressure which means poor disposal but the above named are not good kicks anyway unless they are under no pressure at all. Probably why it is important to have a good midfield to prevent the ball going in too easy and take away that pressure. He is an accountant as well so wont be jerked around regarding his salary..:)
