One of St Kilda’s greatest players, Riewoldt’s jumper has been in mothballs since the champion centre half-forward retired at the end of 2017.

But what an honour it would be if Riewoldt and the club offered it up to the club’s newest big man and lifelong St Kilda fan, King.

NEW NUMBERS: WHO WILL WEAR WHAT AT YOUR CLUB

DRAFT BOLTER: SAINTS SNARE SA GOALSNEAK

GARY BUCKENARA: WAS PICKING KING A BIG MISTAKE?

The 204cm goalkicker idolized Riewoldt growing up and, although they are yet to meet, Riewoldt will clearly take a keen interest in the No.4 draft pick.

King could learn so much from the six-time best-and-fairest winner, so why not give him his jumper as well? The baton has to be passed at some point.

If King and Riewoldt are happy with it, then it’s perfect. St Kilda fans will surely love seeing the No.12 striding back out from the goalsquare and slotting majors again.

Some may say it would only add extra pressure on King, but really it should be seen as a compliment.

And Riewoldt won’t want his guernsey stuck in the cupboard forever.

Shaun Atley wears Wayne Carey’s No.18 at North Melbourne, and Geelong gave Gary Ablett Sr’s No.5 to Nakia Cockatoo.

The romance of it all should go on, so the kids who wear Riewoldt’s No.12 can enjoy that excitement of seeing it back out there.

Max King posted a picture of his old Saints jumper on Instagram.

Nick Riewoldt’s No.12 has been in mothballs since his retirement.
King is a serious talent and could have gone No.1 in last week’s national draft if he didn’t suffer a knee reconstruction.

We think he will be a fine player, from everything we saw pre-knee reconstruction. He has been likened to Tom Lynch and Joe Daniher because of his speed, agility and skyscraping marking power.

The Saints envisage a twin tower setup with Paddy McCartin for the next decade, and as footy boss Simon Lethlean said on Thursday night, that’s something that worked a treat for West Coast.
Lethlean is showing how he likes to bulls*** and the gullible listen. He is a dud. Those two WC forwards have been virtually good players from day 1, one is a star and the other is not far behind him. Why make those stupid comparisons. I can hear the sniggers around the AFL from here. Why not say it as it is. Paddy has a shedful of work to do to be the saints leading goalkicker in 2019 and will be fighting to make the team even and King is still injured and may not play until rd 5/6 at best and that's at sandy....WTF....Don't mind the rest of your post.
Not sure why you're getting so salty mate as Lethlean said next TEN years not just pigeonholing it for next year alone. If he didn't say that they ENVISAGE Paddy and King to be the next Roo/Kosi setup then I'd say that they don't understand football very well given the obvious potential both players have.

If you look at the below stats comparing McCartin and Kennedy at the same age of their career then you'll see there wasn't much difference . If anything it's more impressive given the hurdles McCartin has had healthwise. The beauty of it all is that we don't need King to be our saviour and rush him in next year as we already have blokes that should be desperate to be selected i.e. Paddy, Bruce, Membrey, Battle, Marshall etc. So I'm sure the plan is for him to get 100 percent fit and back playing football at any level.

Those stats show a gulf between Paddy and Kennedy. For starters Kennedy is 3/4 of a year younger, beats him on every meaningful stat, and importantly had more than double the average goals AND tackles. Paddy wins one solitary stat - behinds per game.

Me too. From memory he wore that same wonky jumper for a couple of years.
These days i think they wear them for one game.

Never understood why they change numbers for. I remember a pretty handy 44 not too long ago kicking a tonne of goals. Plus some old guy wore 35 for a hell of a long time as well.

It's just number!!!!!

I'm sure Jade doesn't carry the burden of the Doc or Plugger every time he runs out!!!!!

Never seemed to burden Rooey running around in Shane Wakelin's number!!!!! ;)
Ha!

If you want to keep No.12 in mothballs, then you'd better get No.4 in a museum for eternity, because the Doc and Plugger were as good as it gets. Might want to do so for the No.10 as well and I ain't talkin' Spider or Micky Roberts. Big Carl Ditterich was right up there with them.
