Its not uncommon for 2nd year players to go backwards in second year. I don't know if they think they will improve naturally or the opposition pay more attention.
We're all abit impatient and want improvement all round. ASAP......Hang on don't panic ( I keep forgetting)
Seriously I would expect any top 10 picks to be a regular in our team by now.

What elite traits does Clark actually show? I'm pretty sure in his draft year some of the ITK sources were saying he's a safe pick with no real x-factor. Granted he's composed and can turn on either side. But what game has he really shown that he's a game winner? Billings in his first year had a game against the Dons where he had 14 Touches, 2 Goals and a bunch of Score involvements and Inside 50s till half time and we could safely say this kid can blow a game open. Gresh did it against Geelong. I maintain the idea that rookies will generally have a standout game where their efforts have played a large role in the win. The kid is a midfielder and has never had more than 20 touches in a game.
It is also concerning as someone else has mentioned that the side with injury issues cant find consistent spots for 2 top 10 picks. Of which the other guy IMO is better and is very stiff not to be playing.

I have at times felt that St Kilda is not as good as other clubs to develop young talent, and certainly it is true that blokes like Seb Ross, Jack Billings and Paddy McCartin are clear examples of high draft picks taking a lot longer than we had hoped. But I have come to the conclusion that because we are transfixed by our own players we are over critical and ignoring the fact that there are many more high draft picks at other clubs that have also failed to make their mark early in their career.

It certainly helps to be drafted to a club that has a strong list of elite level players and regularly play finals: Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney in particular. Being part of a team that possesses a winning culture will usually have a positive impact on developing a high level of football skills in young players. Then there is natural talent, and how often do we see the top 3 or 4 draftees being eclipsed by those picked later, it happens all the time: in the 2015 NAB Draft St Kilda selected Jade Gresham at 18 and he is arguably now rated in the top 5 of that draft.

Likewise, we can be happy about Josh Battle, taken at 39 in 2016, who is proving he could have been top 10 that year.

So in essence I am not unhappy about the likes of Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield being A graders yet, in the games they have played since they were drafted they have shown enough to indicate that they will eventually be in the team's best 22.

In The Australian last weekend they listed the number of "recycled" players at every AFL club, Hawthorn and Collingwood each have 14, St Kilda 11. What this indicates to me is that clubs rely just as much on luring talented players from other clubs as developing their own talent. Quite often an ordinary player at one team becomes a champion at another, which is why we should be very cautious about calling for St Kilda to trade out slow developers like Billings....

Was number 1 player on the ground on Saturday for pressure acts on either team.

If you're going through a rough patch and struggling to find the footy, being the #1 pressure player shows your commitment and desire.

Clark will be find, it's classic second year blues.

Jack Steele and Hunter Clark should be allowed off the leash throughout games, especially Steele. I believe that Jack could be our most damaging player if given this role instead of negating other players

Yes but he was largely invisible. Dunno what these acts were, but on telly he didn’t have much presence.

Will it save him from being axed?
Given Richo is consistently inconsistent with how he treats players who knows.

Yes it may be second year blues - but he still needs to improve significantly at some point this season IMO

I have no qualms about Clark's attitude or effort...I just think he lacks speed, power, and natural brilliance.... and if he does possess those traits, he has yet to prove it.

I think with our current list and injuries, we'll be sliding down the ladder at speed. Another bottom 4 finish will seal Richos fate.

Just needs a big pre season in the gym. Seems to get knocked of the ball a little to easy. Ceratinly has good disposal skills

Get a f****** grip and grow some f****** patience.

Every player develops differently for a multitude of different reasons. Jack Billings is a classic example of a high draft pick that has taken 5 years to get up to a high quality standard. If it takes Clark and Coffield that long like Billings then so be it. If it's less time, then that's a bonus.
Totally agree. Particularly true when he is the type of player he will eventually become. At the moment, he doesn't have 'man strength' in his core, so gets pushed off the ball and out of position too easily. Therefore he can't use his wonderful skills as freely as he could as an underage player. He also doesn't have the tank to gut run, which means he's not running back to defend as much as the coaches would like. That will come though. And when it does, he will be a seriously good player. Would like to see us get games into Coffield for the same reason.
Exactly Twirlers.

The development of Ross and Billings has been great. Paddy has not worked due to injury.

If people think Ross and Billings should have developed quicker it is because they want a Messiah to give them a quick fix IMO. The problem is not the club or players but the supporters with the unrealistic expectations of kids IMO.

Billings is likely to win our best and fairest this year and is averaging 27 disposals per game in only his 6th season. He will only get better.

Bont walked into the dogs and was a gun from the start. That is not development. They recruited a star from start up.

Billings is progressing as Lenny progressed.

You should not confuse development with your wish for a messiah to walk into the Saints and dominate from the start.
