Trade Long

Post: # 1810287Post fugazi »

A player with currency that I would be willing to trade, although could come back to bite.

Has not developed this year, seems to show flashes then disappears.

Kent, Lonie, Parker, Hind all seem to have gone past him.

Thoughts?

How old is he? Jeez, I'd hate to trade Benny right now, think it's a no from me

Got to give something to get something and we do have a glut of small forward/HFF now. Lonie, Parker and Hind are the best of them so Long is down the list IMO. I like him and would be happy to keep him but if it meant loosing him for a Brad Hill type then its a no brainer.

His currency would be a pick in the 40s. Not worth much

I reckon it is more like mid 20s to the right club

I reckon at this stage - with a new coach incoming - just about everyone is up for grabs at the right price. Not shopping the whole list around, but you listen to every approach with an open mind.

If someone was desperate and came offering a pick in the first half of the second round (somewhere between 20-30) I'd have a serious look at it.

Give Joyce a two-year contract extension but trade Long. Makes complete sense.

Ben Long is in his third season of senior AFL football. He is still only 21 years of age and has played a total of 25 games including 11 this year, the most he has played in any of his three seasons.

He also plays in the graveyard and at times thankless small forward position. He needs another 30- 40 games or so and will probably benefit under a different coaching regime where he might be given a different set of challenges.

He has already shown glimpses of brilliance and has plenty of upside. Trading him at this juncture for another late second-round and risky draft pick would be a pointless trade IMO.

I agree with all of that. If we need Brad Hill so badly? then we'd be better off swapping our first rounder, unless it's in the first 3 picks

Understand your thoughts but disagree.

Lonnie, Gresham and I think Steven next year will be first choice small forwards rotating up the ground.

Kent has hit his ceiling and can only play small forward, no tank or defense to his game to play mid so back up for mine. Could he play a Guerra style half back role, he has the left boot for it.

Parker and Hind like Long still unknown with upside.

Long could potentially play back or forward and is hard at the contest and puts pressure, also a straight set shot.

No chance. He was a VFL player taken way earlier in the draft than anyone expected, and he's played 25 games over 3 years for career averages of 10.4 disposals, 2.8 marks, 0.6 goals and 3 tackles per game.

He does have flashes of quality here and there but he seriously lacks consistency, and doesn't really have any stand out attributes. He's aggressive but he doesn't make that many tackles and he gives away far too many dumb free kicks.

Last year Tom Scully was traded for a future fourth round pick, Aaron Hall for pick 68, Taylor Durea for a future fourth round pick, Tom Hickey for pick 39, Hannebery for a future second round pick and an 11 pick downgrade, Sam Lloyd for pick 64, Jack Scrimshaw and a fourth round pick for a third round pick, Jack Hombsch for a future fourth round pick, Jordan Roughead for pick 75 and Travis Colyer for a future fourth round pick. You could make a reasonable argument that all of these players are more valuable than Ben Long.

I can't see BR or RL trading out Long. Not unless RL brings Hill with him and Benny goes to Freo as part of the deal.

But I digress, BR is the coach unless admin can lure RL back.

Benny is a potential jet and will only be traded if it is part of an upgrade to an A grader midfielder which is only likely with clubs like Freo and Hill...which A grade midfielder is gettable from Essendon.

Silly to trade a young player now when a new coach is going to take over. Lots of potentual so let's set what Ratts can get out of them

Nope

Why put two years of development into him, and then trade him so another club can benefit. Sounds like Cripps, Lynch, McEvoy, Stanley.

He is nowhere near his prime.

If he’d shown nothing, delist

If he’s shown something, keep

I reckon he’s shown a bit

We should keep him because of his upside and the player he could potentially become.

While I did think of adding in the bit about the time and cost of developing him etc, I refrained as that is the classic sunk cost fallacy.

We should not seek to trade anyone out. Let offers come to us and we will have the better side of the bargain.

Firstly, absent McCartin and King and with Battle now established in defence, we are reliant on Bruce (who also rucks) and Membrey (at 188cm) as our "tall" forward options and hardly ideal.

Consequently we see the "small" forwards we are currently fielding.

Once we structure up the balance between "smalls" and "talls" will alter.

Also impacting will be any addition of skilled and quick mids - meaning the likes of Gresham and Steven will occupy the forward "smalls" requirement along with Lonie.

And, once we get there, we will be on our way.

The result of this transition will be that the likes of Kent, Parker, Hinds etc. will struggle for selection.

They were all recruited ahead of 2019 to add experience to an inexperienced side, so job done in 2019.

I acknowledge the excitement because of their journeys to St Kilda but realistically they are transitory selections, filling an immediate requirement not a long term solution

They have, after all, come from others Clubs as mature aged players, including from State Leagues.

If we bundle Long with White and Rice we may attract a lot more interest.

Interesting thing with rice and the tricolours of our club

There's varieties of red, black and of course many varieties of white rice

The King of the White rices imo is basmati. Can't get enough of it and I've been using it for my home made special fried rice

If you've never bought prepacked cooked rice you should give it a go. Takes 90 seconds in the microwave. Love mixing it with a can of chilli tuna. It also comes in precooked medium grain and long grain Brown rice varieties and I like that one plain with some butter or margarine. Brown rice is more nutritious and also contains moe fibre

If you are cooking raw Brown Rice it must be cooked Longer. Similar to Savage/wild rice. It's nuttier and has a chewy Byte'l'
