Robert Eddy fun fact!

The superstar role player and Desciple of the Lyin played only 33 games.

His illustrious career included 9 finals!!

At the same time Geary had played 44 games and no finals.
His one and only final was the 2011 Elimination Final.

Clark Keating and Snake Baker spring to mind.

Kept them in cotton wool until the business side of the season 👍

Every time I see Stuv kick goals like he did when we played him as a forward last week I think of what could have been in 2009/2010.

You have a talented young speedster like Jack Steven available back then and sitting in stands. Instead, our genius coach plonks Eddy or Dempster in the forward line as a taggers/defenders. Unbelievable!! This was one of the main reasons that we lost grand finals.

So the footy is in the vicinity of your forward half, but you have been instructed to make sure you defend. Goals can only occur incidently or if they are as a result of a dirct kick to your planned target go to tall forwad. Ludicrous!! How'about selecting forwards that play with natiral instincts and actually want to win the footy and kick a bloody goal!!

Yeah but he is still a genius and a great coach

10000%. Imagine having Jack Steven and David Armitage in our 2009 and 2010 GF teams instead of say, Eddy and McQualter.

Fv%k.

Short career but rode them waves. Won a final then dropped for GF! De-listed after both 2010 GFs , re-drafted. Delisted again a year later. Still plays SANFL?

Jack was named as an emergency I believe in the grand final. So pretty difficult to go with the 'he was injured' line and that's why he wasn't selected

When I first joined the forum I had a running battle with plugger66 who kept pushing the theme that Jack had OP. Most of the stuff plugger66 posted was apologist myth to counter the arguments.

The other (NOT VERY) fun fact about Robert Eddy is that I believe he's the only player who's last two games of AFL football were Grand Finals.

Continued to play with a broken arm in the 2010 prelim which allowed us to rest 6 players on the bench half way through the last quarter.

Apart from that, a very ordinary player.

How did he play the 2010 GF x2 if he had a broken arm in the Prelim. Did he really play two GF's with an already broken arm? Amazingly brave/but crazily stupid if true ...

Definatley injured that year in 2009.

Dal Santo was also carrying a hamstring strain in 2010 which he sustained in the prelim. Played poorly in the next 2 games

I can't recall, but I'll take your word on it for 2009. Stuv was definitely available and named as an emergency in 2010.

I will never forgive Lyon for his selection stuff ups and blind faith in grand finals for Eddy (2010) and McQualter (2009 &2010).

It cost us two premierships! He virtually admitted his mistake by delisting both players shortly after.

Was much better than Baker, Peake and McQualter in that first 2010 GF. When he caught Harry O holding the ball was a huge play. Shame he hit the post! Broke his arm in the replay in 2010 and played through the game.

Steven did not have OP

He was playing for Sandy at the time and even debuted in R19 for StK

Why would he be playing games if he had OP

Armitage was the one in 09
Got three Brownlow votes in R19
Was dropped a couple of matches later?!
Conditions would have suited him down to the ground too!

McQualter had an outstanding 2009 season and was in the top 5 in the AFL for goal assists. He also averaged 5 tackles per game as a small forward and 1 goal per game.

McQualter absolutely deserved his spot in that side and Jack Steven (aged 19 with 1 game of experience) would not have offered more than McQualter (aged 23 with 50+ games experience) in 2009.

However 2010 is a different story... McQualter's form really dried up in the back half of 2010 and in my view he should not have made the grand final team that year. Steven and Armitage should have been ahead of him. Armo had 21 disposals and 7 tackles from 70% game time in round 22, 2010 and was dropped thereafter. Unfathomable.

Eddy... courageous and tough but that's it... had very little talent. Bamboozling why he was selected.

Was in the team to play an incredibly specific role, as was McQualter.

McQualter was absolutely superb in 2009. Delisted the year before, he reinvented himself as a sacrificial player and became an outstanding 'link-up' forward with obscene tackling pressure.

Not sure why he dropped off so much in 2010 towards the back end of the season. Disappointing - I thought he could have been a long-term option.

On the unpluggered podcast this week, Schneider was full of praise for the roles Eddy and Mcqualter played in 09 and 10.

McQualter is a funny one because ppl forget, as Legendary elegantly pointed out.., he was actually quite good over 2009 and completely deserved his spot in the big dance.

He was way way waaaaay down in 2010.
Many ppl myself included posted fairly regularly about it at the time.

His continued, almost automatic selection minus being dropped once was IMO what ultimately led to our failure at the end.
As was the case for many players at the end that we’re out of form (McQualter, Eddy, Gardiner, Gram, Dempster)...
If they were dropped and forced to earn their way back after overcoming their deficiencies, they’d have been playing better when it mattered.
If guys like Armitage and Steven got the opportunity and took the spot away on form... they’d have played better when it mattered

Either way we wouldn’t have had so many passengers in the draw

Have been very sensitive to the automatic selection of players in bad form since... it’s why the whole Weller situation bothered me so much in 2017

Great post. People like to pile on.

I remember him hitting the post he was about 45-50 out on an angle and I thought at the time, if that was a goal it might have helped make him as a player”

Again people like to pile on
