Roberton Good to Go in 2020???

Post: # 1827509Post damienc »

Recently read something that said DR now has his irregular heartbeat under control thanks to meds and a defrib in his chest.

Looking to play in 2020.

Would dearly love this to be true.

Can anyone verify or add to the story?

Been a couple of years out, interesting to see how he’d go, and whether there would be any mental effects?
From his own admission, he is really unfit these days.

Plus we have Wilkie, Savage, Geary, Webster, Clark, Coffield, Paton fighting for 4 spots. Who’s spot would he take?
Will Roberton

A strong pre season would fix the fitness pretty quickly.

When he was fit and playing, he was brilliant for us.

Personally I think he would walk back in IF his heart troubles are truly behind him.

There are 6 spots in the backline, not 4. Carlisle, Wilkie, Roberton, Coffield, Battle, Geary, Savage are the first 7 fighting for 6.
Then there's Clavarino, Paton, Webster.
Clark is a midfielder not a backman - he'll move up in 2020.

I agree largely with The Oracle on this. You could say Roberton replaces Brown from our 2019 lineup.

You really need 7 defenders in the 22- so for me it is the 7 listed by TO, save perhaps for Webster ahead of Savage.

Definitely room for both Roberton and Wilkie in our best 22.

I don’t think Roberton is a key defender? Which is generally 2 spots

So I left out Carlisle, Brown, Battle, Marsh, Clavarino, Joyce

Clark played his best footy across HB last year, after struggling in the midfield.

On form the backline would be

Wilkie - Brown - Geary
Savage - Carlisle - Clark

With Webster or Coffield as the extra on the bench

The midfield would be something like

Hill - Hannebury - Billings
Marshall - Steele - Ross
Bench: Dunstan - Z Jones

Forwards
Lonie - Battle - Hind
Gresham - King - Membrey
Bench Ryder

Emerg
Defenders Webster or Coffield
Mids
Forwards Long

Sandy
Joyce, Clavarino, Marsh, Paton,
Langlands, Bytel, Phillips
Parker, Kent, Mayo

Out
Newnes, Acres, Bruce, Steven, McKenzie

Very similar players but from what I have seen so far, Roberton has a more offensive/attacking side to his game than Wilke.

I have serious man love for Wilke.

What's the more likely outcome with that lot ?

Another spoon,
Finish mid table,
Make the 8.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

can't see him comng back to play out a full career, however really hope he does.
as for how do we fit him in? if he ever gets back to his 2017 form he is one of the first picked. not one of our backmen at the club has had a better season than he since dempster in 2012.
good luck to him.

We have not seen the best of Wilkie. More than handy tall forward and played the role very well in the SANFL. Very dangerous running the corridor behind the play. He, Battle and Membrey could cause quite a headache if the could work out the correct running patterns. I'm not suggesting we move him but I'm very confident that we could.

Read my mind. Wilkie could well be a very useful swingman option for us. A fully fit Roberton Carlise Battle and Wilkie would make an exceptional intercept marking quartet. Battle and Wilikie could rotate forward and back also to create match up headaches for defenders. Getting Roberton back would certainly help our situation if we do lose Bruce.

I wouldn't be banking on Robbo, and it would be nice to see him out there, but those pesky heart problems just come back and bite you.

I’m with you, spert. I would love to see him return but I remain wary that his heart issue has truly resolved.

Relative had a heart issue that required a device to synchronise one side of the heart but at the same time had a defribrilator inserted close to the front of her shoulder.

I kind of like the extra draft picks you get for finishing bottom like Gold Coast.
Could really do with two crack midfielders and that's only starters.

Somewhere in that mix is the making of a pretty good footy team.

I am not a doctor but I really believe Roberton and McCartin should retire for their own good (as well as the clubs). It is too risky for either of them to attempt to come back. One would be risking having a heart attack on the field and the other would be risking permanent brain damage (or heaven forbid), having a stroke on the field. I hope common sense prevails and they both retire. Put them both on as assistant coaches.

A similar team with a ridiculous injury list won 9 games in 2020

Only concern is Moving a Battle after he played well at CHB to replace Bruce.

Hill a big addition
King literally a big addition
Carlisle and Hannebury fit

Not a bad team, given a good injury run
