Who do you want Josh Bruce or Zac Smith ?
Well Zak Smith has been traded to Gold Coast.

Zak Jones should be a Saint though.

I think folks are forgetting this year and next year's draft are both weak and severely compromised. If you're going to loose picks, you do it now. Also Brad was contracted and you'll always pay overs. We've done very well.

No First Round, No Second Round, No Third Round and No Fourth Round (Butler)

In 2020
First Round, No Second Round, 2 x Third Round, No Fourth Round

Talk about selling the farm and Mortgaging the future?

We traded in one good player and some OK players

Lost
Steven, Acres, Bruce

Wow
the progress in our current development cycle of this current build is dictating we pick some AFL ready/proven players for the position deficiencies, to improve the age profile and to add some A grade class, somewhere in there is leadership as well. to that end we don't really need too much from draft this year and next due to the young nature of the list and the talent potential already stocked, next years draft is compromised so a strong draft hand is not required this year or next as much as a successful trade campaign and by 7pm tonight I'd say the club can give itself a very very big tick.

What

1 tap out of 80 or so that happen every game

The Mids didn’t cover that one well, Longer didn’t kill the ball and a star player (Gray) got one out the back.
Guns like Bont, Dusty, Danger, Shuey, Treloar and dare I say it Steven do that a few times a game. That one is remembered because it was in the last 10 seconds.

As I wrote at the time I'd have preferred to target a Rutagelea or Chol who can play key forward and ruck like Marshall.

Its not like we weren't prepared to trade players or picks.

No interest in a 32 YP former champ for me.

Our draft team have not performed well for the past 15 years, hence the club's ladder position.
When they go to the cupboard to look for draft picks they will find it as bear as Old Mother Hubbard's.

The draft hand for 2019 sits at pick 76 and 82 both have no points value but bundling of multiple picks for father-son and academy picks may create an insignificant handful of points.
They will need someone to wake them up when that time comes around.
Probably looking for a couple of mature age recruits.

2020 they may have a 1st round pick but that may disappear to Brisbane for Ben King despite his contract and the AFL ambassadorship.
AFL ambassador money is NOT included in the salary cap and is paid by the AFL.
2020 3rd round pick of Fremantle and 2020 4th round pick of Port Adelaide are just waiting for the list team to trade away in 2020.
Maybe these two picks will be bundled to secure Ben King.

Ryder will be very handy - highly underrated addition to our team on this forum

Great second ruck and a legitimately accurate set shot on goal

2019 Draft Hand
We must have a minimum of 3 picks in the draft but can cont the upgrade of rookies.
Upgrade Callum Wilkie and use picks 56 and 82
At least if the recruiters stuff up the draft it won't matter.

2020 Trade Hand
1st round pick (attached to St Kilda)
3rd round pick (attached to Fremantle)
4th round pick (attached to Port Adelaide)
4th round pick (attached to Sydney)

And

Hill will play until 34?

Hill is a proven gun

Howard is not a gun at the moment, he may turn out alright. He may not.
Oh Howard is a gun. As well as been a good key defender, he also has the ability to be an effective key forward.

The club has just completed one of its most successful trade periods, but apparently it’s to no avail because we’ve sold the farm. We still have a pretty young list and this year’s draft isn’t supposed to have a lot of depth. So let’s not go forecasting gloom and doom for the future yet.

Who doesn’t think we paid over for Hill?

Even Lethlean said we had to in order to get him.

So what is your point. I'm only reading whinging. We got our 5, Acres was no loss and Jack and Josh were going anyway. The key part of Lethleans comment was we had to, it is the same with Steven, we had to.
The draft had very little value for us in terms of our needs and we filled the purse with 1.9m. I'm so happy, I'm going to Shanghai.

You can't win every trade.
But each trade served a purpose, even the Steven one where we got smashed still frees salary cap.
Overall we have a better squad.
Ryder the only older player and he is there to support and develop Marshall and is not expensive in $ or trade cost.

All the others are under 26, and are AFL conditioned.

Still retain a good hand in next years draft.

Well done to the recruiters. Maybe we can pinch a good player at 51 to cap it off.

The way I look at it, we started a fortnight ago with pick 6 as our draft hand for 2019. Nothing else.

We used that for Brad Hill. Would we have drafted a player as good as Brad Hill with pick 6? No guarantee.

We then traded Bruce for Howard, Acres for Jones, and pick 35 in 2020 (approx) for Ryder and Butler.

We otherwise kept our 2020 draft hand after having a huge crack at the draft in 2018.
