Jono Marsh

Post: # 1831745Post saintspremiers »

Looks to me every bit a VFL player.

Are we wasting our time with him for 2020?

So many ahead of him - assuming our backline isn’t destroyed again by injury he’s virtually no hope of senior selection

I disagree that we are wasting our time with him. He virtually had no preseason and when he played for us, he did alright. Certainly wouldn't be in our starting team but is excellent depth and can play either end.

The challenge is how fit can he get ?

I would like to see him take Acres spot as the big bodied kind of random mid.

He has done it at WAFL

Is bigger, stronger and maybe faster than Acres - seems to play in a kind of random manner - not sure he will be quite to Acres levels of randomness though

hopefully it would be fun to watch him in there

Yep, I was just about to post that myself. Apparently, when he went back to East Fremantle (after Collingwood) he played 2 successful seasons as a big-bodied midfielder. I would have thought he would be worth a try; especially under a different coaching set-up.

The club would be aware of what he did in the WAFL, as part of their assessment before drafting him.

Agree that with Acres gone, Marsh should be tried there. In intra-club games, match sim, and then pre-season games. I would love them to try him there, it's worth a shot, not left-field because he's done it before !

Not good enough at ground level to be a mid, hands, vision and disposal in close not at the Level required of an afl mid.

Is very athletic for a big bloke. Ideally is suited to being a third, but Wilkie has taken that role.

Hill, Billings, Jones will be our Wingers in 2019
Phillips and Langlands to back them up.

Will be better next season after a full pre-season but unless we get major injuries can't see him being more than a back up for a third tall defender. He was originally recruited as a backup.

Zero chance of playing as a mid. The gap between WAFL and AFL is a chasm. Wilke was playing the ruck in the SANFL and there's no way he could do that at AFL level.

Agreed, but Wilkie did have a run in the ruck... in one of his first games.

Unsurprisingly he got Zero hit outs!

Well I’m going to do a huge backflip on the back of the new Marsh series.

We have to keep him now and he has to play on both Marsh games!

Not forgetting of course, he's an ex-AFL player, and did quite well as a running back at Collingwood. With an AFL pre-season under his belt he'll be more than useful as backup, I'm hoping even a regular.

He’ll be better but if Marsh is in the side as a running defender I think we’ll be really struggling.

Prefer others:
Eg
Clark, Coffield, Webster, Savage, Roberton, Wilke etc..

Could play a Jason Blake type of role. Otherwise, I thought he could be a high half forward / hit up leading link player. But I'd take Battle over him in that role 8 days a week if Battle is no longer in the back line.

Would like to see him after a full preseason. At 24 years of age he could be a late bloomer. Has great speed and nice height.

His formative years (21 /22) were spent kicking around in the WAFL and obviously younger again during his stint at Collingwood.

Worth holding onto for 1 more year. At worst is good depth.

Wilkie went into the ruck in the first JLT game when Peirce went off. I can't remember him doing it in the season proper.

He got three hitouts and only 4 disposals so he probably only came on after half time.

Not a bad player to have on the list but will certainly struggle for selection considering the sheer quantity of defenders he's competing with. Didn't look like a forward and I don't think he's skillful enough to be a mid. Should model his game on 2009-2010 Sam Gilbert.

I agree. I know that the WAFL midfield doesn't compare directly with the standard required of the AFL - but give him a full AFL preseason and some good midfield players around him and I think with his size, pace and agility he could be a revelation. I agree he needs to work on his touch but most of that is confidence.
