I grew up in the 70's. Most of my coaches and club administrators were older guys born between the 30's and 50's. Girls played with boys back then as I'm sure they do now. They old blokes didn't seem to mind. Some did, but words were had and common sense usually prevailed.
There wasn't many girls willing, but some were. They were all pretty good too. They had to be. A few boys got a bit rough when they got shown up for skill but that got evened up. Another ugly side of the realities of gender division.
I always wondered what would have happened if they could have continued after 12 years of age, if they had a female team to play with. They mostly ended up netballers and basketballers and the stood out there too.
I played and coached over 200 games of junior football. I remember watching very average skilled boys develop into good young footballers. It takes time.
I hope the sport, the AFL and the community continues to develop young women this way. There inclusion won't hurt the sport and it just might make our communities easier to live in, for a lot of young people who don't shine immediately, like others can or don't fit in like others do.
I understand the nature of the beast and the ferocity of competition, but even the champions of the game started somewhere. No one does it alone.
