St Kilda vs Port-Confirmed as now Sun 7 June as Shanghai is cancelled
(Edit. Shanghia now officially cancelled and game confirmed to now be on Sunday 7 June at Marvel Stadium)
https://www.afl.com.au/news/381249/afl- ... d-revealed
The Saints-Power round 11 clash – originally scheduled for Sunday, May 31 in Shanghai – will instead be played at Marvel Stadium in round 12 on Sunday, June 7 at 5.40pm AEST.
With Marvel Stadium unavailable on Saturday and Sunday of round 11, both teams will now play a week later and then switch their planned bye weekend from round 12 to 11.
It is probably 99.999% likely that the St Kilda v Port game will not now be in China.
So where and when will it be?
My guess that is that it will be moved to the Friday night May 29 at Marvel.
Why?
- Saints are keen on Moorabbin, but I doubt the AFL would approve it.
- There are already games at Marvel on the Saturday and Sunday
- St Kilda plays on the preceding Saturday, as does Port. So 6 day break is ok.
Current Fixture:
ROUND 11
Friday, May 29
Hawthorn vs. Melbourne (MCG) (N)
Saturday, May 30
Geelong Cats vs. North Melbourne (GMHBA)
Richmond vs. Sydney Swans (MCG)
GWS GIANTS vs. Adelaide Crows (GS) (T)
Western Bulldogs vs. Carlton (MRVL) (N)
Fremantle vs. Brisbane Lions (OS) (N)
Sunday, May 31
Essendon vs. Gold Coast SUNS (MRVL)
Collingwood vs. West Coast Eagles (MCG)
St Kilda vs. Port Adelaide (AAJS) (T)

Only if they still give us the $2million one would presume.
Lethlean seems to think it will be in Vic though.

Re: St Kilda vs Port Friday on Friday, May 29?
I missed this Age article:
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/chi ... 53zu4.html
There will be no fairytale return to Moorabbin, with the AFL’s doomed game in China between St Kilda and Port Adelaide set to be moved to Marvel Stadium.
The fixture is likely to be a stand-alone Thursday night game but won’t be held in front of the animal cage, despite the public spruiking from the Saints on Tuesday
So I presume that would be Thursday 4 June as we have the bye that weekend.

I think the last time I made it to a Port game in Vic was in the 90s

Re: St Kilda vs Port Friday on Friday, May 29?
The realistic options are...
Thursday Night May 28th - Both clubs would only have a 5 day break leading into it, but there's no fixture clash and both teams retain their bye.
Monday Night June 1st - Makes the most sense fixture-wise, but the AFL and the clubs aren't keen on a return to Monday night footy.
Thursday Night June 4th - Avoids any fixture clashes, but would mean both clubs would be without a bye for the season.
Sunday Afternoon/Night June 7th - Only one game that day at the MCG, public holiday the next day, but again, both clubs would be left without a bye, and St Kilda would be left with a six day break ahead of flying to Darwin.
Given St Kilda have effectively sold a home game to Port Adelaide, it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up at the Adelaide Oval on the original date (May 31st).

Can’t play on Friday 29th, I’m flying to Shanghai that day.

Both clubs play on Saturday May 23rd, and Port are playing Tassie. So Thursday Night May 28th is not enough of a gap for mine.

Yes to watch livestream would cost a fortune as the price per MB is eyewatering and also not sure how a VPN might work when in the air.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Thu 20 Feb 2020 2:57pm Can’t play on Friday 29th, I’m flying to Shanghai that day.

Re: St Kilda vs Port Friday on Friday, May 29?
With their last game having been on 23rd May that at 12 days is close enough to being a bye. Not all teams get a 14 day break anyway.
ie Essendon plays Sunday May 31, hs their bye and then plays Thursday June 11 = 11 day break.

So to all the people that keep insisting we should not play overseas games you are all going to make up the $1,000,000 for this year???

Re: St Kilda vs Port Friday on Friday, May 29?
No, but I do buy four memberships, and I am not totally against us playing overseas in the first place - I supported the idea of us playing in NZ originally. I just think that the club need to approach these games professionally if they do do go ahead with them.Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Thu 20 Feb 2020 4:42pm So to all the people that keep insisting we should not play overseas games you are all going to make up the $1,000,000 for this year???
The money the club made from playing in NZ and in China last year was made under false pretenses because Wellington and Shanghai believed that they were paying for competitive matches with clubs which would showcase Australian Rules Football at the elite level.
St Kilda haven't gone close to managing those matches anywhere near what anybody in their right mind could reasonably assess as 'elite level sport'. We performed like rank amateurs in all of those matches.
If and when we play overseas again I would hope and expect that the club approach the proceedings at a far more serious level, not just pocket the cash, embarrass and frustrate the members and supporters and not even bother taking the actual game seriously.

It's a bit late, but why not pull the trigger on Japan or Korea? They are sport loving nations and would appreciate a bit of AFL.

Though it appears it is not where Port want to play, but where the AFL wants us to play. Hence Cairns as a possibility.
Without Chinese Money what Port wants is not really an issue as the money is effectively no longer being generated through them.

it's appears it's where the AFL can get the funds to compensate St Kilda for the $$$ budgeted for and now not coming in>>>saintsRrising wrote: ↑Sun 01 Mar 2020 11:44amThough it appears it is not where Port want to play, but where the AFL wants us to play. Hence Cairns as a possibility.

I think it is more that as the AFL is topping us up at present that they are not giving us the choice to play the game in Vic as they do not want to have to top us even more.

Re: St Kilda vs Port- Where will it be?
Cairns seems to be the favourite.
Being in Cairns also means that they can stick to same broadcast date and time slot of
Sunday 31 May at 4.10 PM AEDT.
