Ben Longs Marks

Post: # 1851240Post CURLY »

Ben Long took two huge marks on Thursday night. The big hanger is receiving all the media attention but to me the one one back with the flight was better.

Thoughts

Yeah loved the flyer, but geez that was a fearless grab early. He has a quality that not all players have, never shirks a moment and looks to want to hurt everyone he tackles.

Agreed +++

It was much bigger in the context of the game as well and set the standard from the start

There was a play on the back flank where he threw his body in and nullified the contest, it didn't even get a mention by the commentators, but all his teammates got around him.
He's like the tough guard dog that doesn't let anything past. Cerberus prevents the dead from leaving, and Carlton certainly are "the dead".

Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"

We have the making of a premiership Defence IMO.
Coff, Long, Wilkie, Howard and Paton could potentially play together for the next 7-10 years.

Yeah his first one was better. Much more impact on the game IMO.

He is a wrecking ball eh. Hits for keeps.

I think he goes for too many marks.
Leaving his opponent front and centre when he and the pack don't take the mark.
Helping out when a team mate is caught one on one makes sense but going for pack marks not so good.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

He’s great. Very reminiscent of Xavier Clarke before injuries and flair-adverse coaching cut him down, I hope the same doesn’t happen to Ben.

Ben uses his hands to grab the ball, X seemed to want to gather the ball in his arms.
Give me Ben

I'm thinking Ratten might disagree with you.

It won't be long till Long's opponent is more worried about where Ben is, than vice versa.

Considering the groundball he gathers, his intercept play in outnumbers, his defensive pressure, tackling and chasing, Im happy if he attacks the packs like that.

Best intercept mark we've had in the side since Shinner for mine, hands down.

Yes, the one back with the flight took more guts and was more important to the team, but the hanger, to me, told me that he had arrived as a ripper player and finally had the confidence to go with being a really good player. There's no going back now.
