Ed Phillips

Post: # 1858110Post skeptic »

Thought this was worth a thread...

Can’t imagine I was the only one surprised to see him as a late inclusion especially ahead of the current forum love child Savage.

And to be honest, he’s a player that I’d long since written off as we don’t hear a lot about him.

What did people think about his game? I was by and large very surprised in a pleasant way. Thought he looked like he belonged early...
Got a bit of ball, used it well, worked hard. Had that fantastic defensive effort against the other King that certainly saved us a goal.

His influence diminished as the game went on and unfortunately the errors crept him. His short sideways pass at the forward 50 that missed his man was pbly the worst of them.

Gotta say though, all things considered, I’d be happy to see him again

Playing on after running about 150m and marking on the wing in the 3rd quarter

We were in control of the game and he just needed to take stock after his exertion

His effort was great but his football sense deserted him at that moment and it turned the tide back in their favour

Great endurance and tries hard but I worry about his disposal efficiency and decision making. Savage would be rightfully annoyed.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

I thought he was very tentative when he got the ball.
Like most in the Richo era, he looked for the safest option that wouldn't lead to a turnover rather than playing on attacking instinct. That made him choose poor options sideways and miss targets.

I have been impressed with Sinclair since coming back into the side.
He's been very self-assured with his decision making and intensity.
Phillips needs more of this.

Sinclair did his normal disappearing act after half time

Phillips is depth. Long way from best 22. But his fitness could be handy in 2020.

I thought he was OK, especially for a first game at this level in a year. The main thing I hope to see in such players is the lack of errors which lead to opposition goals. He has good pace which can prove an asset and his skills are OK. Decision making was a bit shaky, but that's to be expected in someone in the first game for a year. So, judgment deferred.

he gets to the ball and he works very hard.

Needs the Richo's slapped out of him.

Possibly so, but last week he was outstanding in Q4. I'm not sure of his time on ground in the second half (this week) but his impact since returning has been solid.

Went ok, saved a certain goal, but also had a brain fade a played on amongst 3 GC players which killed our momentum at the time.

Probably will make way for someone this week.

The constant sly digs aimed at Richo are wearing a bit thin.

Completely unnecessary imho.

But digs at blokes who you personally don't like, like Lyon, are perfectly fine?

Sure, ok, no worries, carry on... :)

Watching the replay , he was better than I thought.
That pass in the last quarter and the stumble when we had momentum stuck in my mind, but the Ben King spoil was excellent.
He actually did quite alot of good things especially in the first half.

Looks like they are keen to get some match practice into a few fringe players like Parker, Savage, Phillips which is a good process as you never know when they are needed.

Yes. He is depth.

To be fair, has not played much footy at AFL level.

I would be inclined to give the kid a break and rate him higher than a long way from our best 22.

Maybe not that long a way.

He could surprise us all.

I would like to see a bit more of him, to see what he can do.

Phillips' defensive effort vs their King was a pleasant surprise. However his sideways attempted short pass across our forward 50 speaks volumes for his instincts.
Phillips was unmanned and a goal on the run from just inside 50 right in front was the obvious option! That is why he probably won't make it.

In fairness... that would have been the instruction to anyone but Gresh over the last 4 seasons
