Gutted
Is it just me or was last night defeat more demoralising than any other loss this year? After getting the game back on our own terms in the last & should have been at least 13 points up with 6 minutes left to play . If we can hold out we make the finals for the first time in almost a decade. Not only did we fold like wet cardboard we lost by 15 points . It's really doing my head in, so much on the line & we didn't have the balls to want it more than them when they were a depleted team. West Coast (as much as I detest them) are a well run, well coached club that never believes their out of the contest & if you give it your all who knows what might happen. We had them on the ropes but they still got back to deliver the knock out punch still so devastated

Re: Gutted
Have one more chance to make up for it.
Still think the Saints have had a good year overall and its a winning season on the win-losz front.
A couple more recruits, kids one year older, a tweak to game style and play at Marvel a lot then the sky is the limit.
2020 has still been a positive although we let go 3-4 games.

Re: Gutted
Yep last night hurt
Some losses more than others but they were ripe for the taking but if I confess ....even when we hit the front and were peppering goals in the back of my mind I thought “we’ll still lose this”
I had that feeling 09 GF first half when again we dominated but couldn’t capitalise only to pay later
“Poor old Saints my Bomber mate....you have to take your chances ...” smug pr!ck but he’s right and I can’t argue
St Kilda are a club that just don’t know how to take its chances - done if that comes down to quality cattle...even in 09 GF we had some bottom 6 that wouldn’t get a game elsewhere in top sides
Geary great , loyal servant would not get a game at all if the top 4 sides let’s face it
At Saints he’s a 200 game veteran
I know deep down we won’t make the 8 this year - I EXPECT us to fold against GWS ...,here’s how it’ll go...
we’ll come out fire n brimstone....dominate 1st qtr and go into qtr time 2 points up
We’ll then have fired our shot for a quarter while the game momentum swings to be played on their terms
We’ll get desperate in the last.....mane you think “we are back in this”
To only watch an errant kick sideways miss a target or the 1000 handball in the chain miss to see the opponent score
Let’s face it we all pray it doesn’t happen like this but deep down in your guts you’d be amazed if somehow St Kilda stood up and win comfortably by 5/6 goals
But we don’t do that.

Re: Gutted
I think the Melbourne loss was more painful but both are right up there on the pain scale. A horribly painful Chinese torture is death by a thousand cuts (as described in Flashman books). It might be said the club does a psychological equivalent to us. But next year......it will be different...(who said that?). GWS are pretty stuffed though at the moment, aren't they, so pass the morphine, here we go again.

Totally agree, Banga. Normally I recover quite quickly from these gut-punching losses - thanks to decades of experience - but this one still stings a lot. Bugger it. Why didn’t Hill kick that goal ? We were that close to putting them away and making finals . Clearly we won’t win the thing, but I started allowing myself to believe in that last quarter that we would win, finish 5th or 6th and maybe even win a final. I am an idiot for thinking that way !bangaulegend wrote: ↑Fri 11 Sep 2020 8:24pm Is it just me or was last night defeat more demoralising than any other loss this year? The stupid part is that we know that we’re suckers yet, in a year of so much turbulence and unease and well, all around sh1tness - it’s been impossible not to hang on to some rays of light at the end of the tunnel and start to buy in. It’s a welcome distraction from the drudgery of Dan’s lockdown.Teflon wrote: ↑Fri 11 Sep 2020 8:46pmNo question St Kilda suck you in more than mostGeorge27 wrote: ↑Fri 11 Sep 2020 8:39pmTotally agree, Banga. Right now - I despise them again (as I did after the Freo game) and I really need to find a way to emotionally divorce myself from next Friday night. It’s not good for my health and I despise going to bed angry and disillusioned. Then sleep like crap and wake up still disgusted.

As my Grandson said after last nights loss, "Geez it hard being a Saints supporter". He''s right, but he's also learnt.as a Saints supporter, how to be stoic and resilient. We Saints supporters have some real character!

My wife doesn’t get it - why I get shitty
I get shitty cause this god damn shitty club sucks me in, leaves me exhausted and utterly deflated
I too need to find a way to divorce myself ...it isn’t healthy I thought I might pop a valve last night
I know we won’t win the thing but to see my club line up while the National Anthem plays knowing people will look at us as a young and upcoming team...that’ll do for now
My god if we pinched a final win...lookout
But I can no longer afford to let myself dream it’s just too painful!!

The part that I struggle...
Even though the umpiring was S#1t
The fixture is rigged
That we’re not that popular
We’re poor
Best players don’t want to come to us
Media aren’t into us
Despite everything pretty much working against us... what I see is opportunity prove the doubters wrong and to stick it up’em
So many opportunities... in games and broader club strategy
And we keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over and over again.
Feel like we’re a dumb club, destined to be our own worst enemy.
It’s all gloom, doom and despair for me this week. I’ll cheer my heart out next week and do it all again but right now it all seems pretty hopeless

You (we) love it.
I know a few Bulldog fans who aren't into it as much as they used to be.
Winning the flag hasn't seen to have done anything for their lives from what I've seen.
Winning is great but you move on. Losing hurts forever or so it seems.

We were in purgatory for one week ten years ago. The rest of the time we have been in hell.

Re: Gutted
Write this season off now. If we fall arse over backwards and play finals we are only making up number this year.
What I think we should do is play any player that we may trade at season end and hope they play well and get their value up.

I agree
Any coach or side that can get the AFL wooden spoon ladder leaders off the deck for a second flag will become immortal

Re: Gutted
To be fair, those last two free kicks to WC were absolute garbage, of the highest order. Geary didn't come close to holding Allan in the goal square and that just sucked the life out of the Saints. We were no hope from that point on. The umps decided to kick us when we were down by awarding that ridiculously soft free kick after the siren for what was no more than a half swing by Hill that barely made contact with the WC player. So in my view we lost by a goal. But we still lost. And to have all the momentum, playing a team who has played 5 games in 19 days, and who have 40 % of their first choice 18 players missing through injury. And we're playing to make finals for the first time in 9 years.bangaulegend wrote: ↑Fri 11 Sep 2020 8:24pm Is it just me or was last night defeat more demoralising than any other loss this year? After getting the game back on our own terms in the last & should have been at least 13 points up with 6 minutes left to play . If we can hold out we make the finals for the first time in almost a decade. Not only did we fold like wet cardboard we lost by 15 points . It
Yep. Gut wrenching. Makes you think if we can't get over the line last night against a top 8 team, when will we.
GWS are a mess atm, but I don't want us to fall into the 8, travel to Optus stadium against a far stronger WC team in front of their home fans, and watch us roll over by 80 points
