He was just entering into elite category he was that good what a shame. He joins Luke Penny and Matt Maguire as very stiff Saints backman who had bigger careers to offer.
He also retires on 92 games and has 2 or 3 sons are we ever going to be lucky with the father/son rule?!!

All the best Dylan in retirement. You were a ripper! Everyone got to see how good you were in 2017 and it's a real shame that we never got to see you back that up.
Another quality player and clubman who had to leave the game too early.

Heartbreaking. Deserved to have a much better career than this. What an absolute travesty for the young man to be cut down in his prime.

In that practice game last year, before his heart problem got him for a second time, he looked a cut above in defence, despite not having played for two years. He will be missed. A Sainter for life.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Does Roberton have a coaching role for 2021 or is that it, he's finished at the Saints ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Very good player for us. Sad to see him go.

He played 92 games in the red, white and black. 3 sons? So no father sons yet again :(

the statement from the saints seems to imply he has a role doing something at the club

He was such a good player and still improving when it all came crashing down.

Terribly unlucky.

Hope he hangs around.

Creates an interesting scenario.
If he is moved to a long term injured status he could remain listed and contracted to the end of the year.

But the list requirement is 44 players with 36 to 38 being seniors with up to 6 rookie A
But can he be delisted and /Callum Wilkie upgraded to the senior list.
With Wilkie, Clavarino and Joyce, as rookie A
And Wood and hunter as "supplemental selection 2021" rookies

That left St Kilda with one more Supplemental Selection 2021 pre season or mid season.
But Paton is gone for the season ad Robbo gone permanently do we get any additional Supplemental Selections.

To answer my own question. This from the AFL.

The AFL has committed to a single Mid-Season Rookie Draft next year, ditching a proposal for multiple 'waiver'-style periods throughout the season.

Clubs received confirmation on Tuesday that the Mid-Season Rookie Draft would return on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, after being put on hold this season due to COVID-19.

It will take on the same format as the 2019 model that saw 13 players selected, including defender Ryan Gardner, who played 10 matches for the Western Bulldogs last season.

The AFL had previously raised an alternative model that would allow clubs to fill vacant list spots or replace inactive players on a monthly basis.

Instead, it will return to a one-off event that allows those overlooked in the 2020 NAB AFL Draft and Rookie Draft, or a player previously delisted, to be selected.

Clubs eligible to select a player during the June intake must have a list spot open following the Rookie Draft or have moved a player to the inactive list via a retirement or long-term injury.

The AFL also confirmed the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) will return from January 6 and run until March 9 on the eve of the 2021 season.

Much like the Mid-Season Draft, clubs must have a list spot open following the Rookie Draft or have moved a player to the inactive list in order to add a player in the window.

For example, Adelaide will be forced to re-draft retired defender Bryce Gibbs due to administration purposes around his payout for 2021. The Crows will be allowed to immediately move Gibbs to the inactive list and add a player via the SSP.

Clubs will have the opportunity to add potential SSP signings to their training squad in the new year – a process used most notably by Richmond's Sydney Stack to win a list spot at Punt Road ahead of 2019.

Should any player selected in the SSP have signed a contract with a state league club, their new AFL home will be required to pay $10,000 that will come from outside the football department soft cap.

Exclusions apply for players who had signed a consent form to train with the AFL club before committing to the state league club, or if the player was entering the 2020 drafts for the first time in their 18th year.

The flat fee of $10,000 applies for the Mid-Season Rookie Draft without any exclusions.

As was the case in 2019, players selected in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft will need approval from their original state league club should the two teams meet during the season, while the Mid-Season draftee will be eligible to return to their original club for finals if not required by their AFL club.

So we definitely have one Supplemental Selection place available until 9 March.
If not used this will be become a mid season rookie selection possibility.
Both Paton and Roberton can be moved to the "inactive list".
The club now knows they have at least 2 picks in the mid season rookie draft if they use the Supplemental Selection immediately.
Otherwise 3 places will be available for mid season rookie selections.

Is there anyone you want added now as a Supplemental Selection closing this Tuesday ?

If he is moved to the "inactive player" list he would remain on the St Kilda payroll as an injured player who could work in a coaching role for the season.
Alternately the club and he could negotiate a contract termination and he move away from football.

What a shame.
It's done now...so I won't dredge, but damn it. He played in Rd 1 last year no?

With the injury to Paton..I just hoped.

Thanks for your service.

Im not really willing to give me mate the ITK tag.
Yes he said he saw him head in hands dejected. But that was months ago and calling his retirement was 50/50 for anyone. So sorry mate. You have never given me a false lead but this one 50% of us were correct.

Far better than a good player. Maybe not a star but at least a very good player. A pity that this will be forgotten because of the heart issue.
