Keep, Trade, Hard rubbish

Post: # 1908517Post older saint »

OK so this list fit or not will not win a premiership. Here is my take on it and what needs to happen. My take is need to perhaps take a step back to take 2 forward . Easier draw next year will help.

Keep: (23)
Steele*
King*
Marshall*
Howard *
Battle
Butler
Byrnes
Bytel
Clark*
Coffield
Crouch*
Gresham
Higgins
highmore
Hill
Jones
Membrey*
Paton
Ross
Ryder
Sincalir
Webster
Wilkie*

All above assumes no offers which are too good not to take. I could see offers coming for Battle as versitile but been unable to find a position. Could be a good 3rd tall for many sides. If offered a later 2nd round pick would do it.. That said * untradable to me

FA
Billings - Keep unless have to pay too much . Performances are solid . Everyone needs to forget draft position ( that represents decisions made by recruiters not by him) . Has been a good AFL footballer for a few years now and can be a 200+ game player for the club. 200+ game players do not just pop up here and there. If someone offered silly money and we were to get a first round pick you would have to consider it as not worth breaking the bank over.

Trade ( if takers)
Dunstan - players who can find the ball always will have value and he can do that. If get a 3rd rounder for him grab it
Lonie - Specialised position small forward. May find someone n the window wants depth there - WC, WB, Rich Geel so even a 4th pick would be yes
Long - Former first round pick counts for nothing, Hard at it and has been tried in multiple positions. What you can get take
Carlilse - Think his back is gone so really has no value - see retire list

Depth ( every list has to have these - experienced players who can play AFL but not in best 22. Cannot just have a reserves group full of kids:

wood
Frawley
Joyce
McKenzie
McKernan

Kids ( just recruited or jury out due to lack of opportunities. Attitude around the club which we don't see can often be the difference here)
Allison
Claravino
Connolly
Heath
Sharman

Retire:
Hannebry - MUST re do deal . He is broken and costing money - even thought things were front ended, which should mean no issues with getting a payout settlement. Distraction of resources trying to restart a broken engine
Geary - Body smashed . heart and sole of the group
Robbo - Like McCartin just unlucky here
Carlisle - Broken
Kent - Unfortunate with injuries this year but plays a position which can be replaced.
Hard Rubbish

Alaabakis - experiment didn't work
Hunter

That has 7 gone plus potentially 3 others on trade. If any of those have to stay then depth players reduce . Depth turnover of around 10 changes, Go to draft and look for specific type of players we need ( not Ben King as we have those type of players) . Class ball users in the middle - not outside.

All good but I would add Ross to the trade list
Get plenty of it but his ball use is dumb at times

  You wanna know something? We wouldn't have lost last night if Seb had been playing.

In my humble f****** opinion, that is.

Yeah I agree, if he played last night we probably would’ve won.
I’m looking at the bigger picture.

hard to argue but i wouldn't want mckernan even as depth. i'd have dunstan as depth - and bring him in for specific tagging jobs as well.

We have about 10 players on our list who simply don’t have a future with the club. That is a hell of a lot of deadwood. This will require some incredible list management to amend this problem. I sincerely hope they have the guts to make these hard calls at the end of the season.

P.S. Simon Lethlean needs to be delisted along with the deadwood. He is a cancerous growth on our club!

Main reason i think is 2 fold:
- Position Mckernan plays is a weakness on the list
- Dunstan has trade value McKernan does not

I keep thinking Wood looks like he could be a good player, fit fast and competitive then I remember that this is pretty much what Roos supporters thought for years, he goes missing and is now 28

He is depth and worth another year.

McKernan and Frawley and Hunter all have to go.

Trading is only useful if you get sufficient value in return. Given our atrocious record with second round draft picks it would be madness to trade out any players worth that sort of return.

As far as seeing the back of players it's mostly those over the age of 30

Hannebery
Geary
Roberton (I know, already gone but still on the payroll)
Carlisle
Frawley
Mckernan

....and of the others, Alabakis

Trade wise.....a fourth rounder for Lonie and a third rounder (probably with a swap of a fourth rounder) for Dunstan. That's the best outcome I can see.

I'd be inclined to leave it at that. Seven players to replace, six of those on the main list. As it sits right now we have a draft pick in the top ten and the next one in the 50s, so we'll be lucky to get one or two quality youngsters in return. The rest of the picks will be future list cloggers.

If we went bonkers an cleared out 12 players, who would we delist next year?? That's the issue with giant clean outs, you're stuck the following year trying to find players to delist

McKernan and Hunter really do need to go. Hopefully Paddy plays on with Marshall and I'd prefer Callum Sinclair to assist Heath in the ressies and as a back up 2nd ruck.
If you could get him back to Victoria he'd be cheap enough to stick in the square and get Max moving more up and down the ground.

I would have no hard feelings towards Hannebury if he was to do the honourable thing and retire .
He's done !
but he's got to go
If he wants the club to honour his contract then he's a campaigner !

We should have traded Lonie when Collingwood was interested a couple of years ago.

That would have been good trading for a change!

After Saturday night's howler, I doubt Lonie will ever play senior footy again. Anywhere.

I have read else where that the club plan on cutting the list significantly and are hoping to top up again with players forced out of other clubs?
Wood is probably the only top up from this year that deserves a second year contract.
Apparently Billings management have 3 interested clubs and will be pushed if there offers trigger a 1st round compensation?
The other rumoured trade option is Battle who will be floated to see what he attracts?

I dont believe Long, Lonie or Dunstan would have any worth while trade currency.

We are in the inevitable position of needing to bring in a number of kids but dont have the draft picks to suit. Our recruitment team missed a significant chance of improving the list in the 2018 super draft.

No probably about it.
Steele, Crouch and Dunstan needed help.
Ross would have given them a rest.

No matter how much ball he gets Byrnes is as damaging as a wet lettuce.
Same goes for Lonie who came in for Membrey.

No one wants our “deadwood”.

We’ll delist those we don't want. They will be lucky to get picked up in the preseason in draft.

Was Mason Wood injured in the second half?

I'm being facetious...obviously he wasn't

Anyone got his second half stats? Did he do a lot of blocking?

Don't agree on trading Dunstan. If there are any takers for Dunstan then we need to ask why. As a tough inside mid? Then we should demand pick 20 or keep so our next coach can develop.
On Lonie, will be a delisted FA so no compo.

We got rid of 11 players at the end of 2020 and look where we are now, and, after our first round pick at years end, we have shite draft picks to fill the rest of the clubs needs. The more players we delist, the more average, fringe or speculative players we will bring in to fill the list spots. Not looking good for the near future.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
