Is Roma a true ruckman?

Post: # 1920439Post terry smith rules »

Certainly did not look like it last night.

Maybe still carrying his injured foot (will be interesting to see if they play/rest him this week)

Or is he more like the old style ruck rover (anyone under 45 look it up).

With Paddy probably with only one more year, we need that tap ruckman coming through to allow Roma to play say 60% forward and 40% on ball.

Marshall didn't have his usual get up and go last night but was shouldering the bulk of the ruck burden and was coming off a big game with not a lot of assistance last week as well.

He has never had a great leap, he does his best at ground level forcing ball forward. Yesterday he needed to put more body into Stanley to take his leap away, but Roma will learn and improve.

To use an even older term, I'd suggest he's more akin to a "Follower" of the 60's/70's especially given his height and mobility.

Ah yes. Well played.

My mind immediately goes to Terry Waters (from the old Scanlen card)

He is the ideal second / support ruckman. His tap work is third class. Constantly puts the ball to where we are not or where we are on the back foot. Great player but first ruck is not his position.

Agree.

I think he is a gun wherever you play him. Ruck, CHF, follower … I reckon he’d even be a terrific CHB.

Problem going forward is that if he is first ruck it leaves us a key position player short. With the current list we’d have no true CHF or CHB.

Structurally that is something we must remedy to improve next season.

I'm not sure what Roma's best position is but if we had another ruckman he could play Key Forward. Let's hope he is fit for all of 2022.

How important is height for a Key Defender, Steven May is out for Melbourne's game today and he is only 190cm, they have replaced him with Smith who is 191cm.

May is their number 1 defender.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Went to school with Terry. Class above me. From memory he played mostly in the school's seconds. Thought he played CHB, not ruck.

Rucks have multiple roles in the team structure
Hit out work is one of the theme
Being essentially a mobile KPP is another

Marshall excels at the latter and is competent to good at the former

It’s why the combination of him and Ryder works so well together because Paddy is elite in the middle and competent to play at the latter

I posted this somewhere else but whatever longer term solution we come up with to replace Paddy… he needs to be more tap specialist that can contribute as a KPP like Paddy drops forward to kick the odd goal more than say another McEvoy type who is brilliant with contested marking but weak in the centre

For the record, I am a big Marshall fan, but he has been towelled up at centre bounces the past two games by former saints ruckmen who we considered not good enough to keep on our list.

Hasn't been fit all season. Interrupted pre-season, then a long lay-off during the season. No-one plays at their best in those circumstances and it's got to harder when you're a big man. Hope he's over his foot issues and can have a big pre-season.

Yep, height isn’t everything. Physicality, speed, strength, good hands are all part of it. Basically they need to be able to go with a Hawkins or a Cameron one out or on the lead.

Who is our equivalent to Steven May?

I think Rhys Stanley is just on a one-year extension contract, so wouldn’t he be available come October? Geelong never seems to mind rotating their ruckman so I am guessing Stanley can live with that role of firsts, back to the seconds, back up to the firsts kind of thing and still maintain his standards.
BTW he would be 31 come 2022.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Great around the ground, but works better as relief to a true ruckman like Ryder.

Also needs to work on his set shots if he wants to be a true danger up forward.

Marshall has to stop kicking the ball every time he gets it. He has to handball it off.

No. CHF.

So we end up with no CHF and a losing ruck against quality. Seems reasonable. Take from Peter and Paul.

Might be because our mids are so poor instinctively we can't cope with anything other than Paddy spoon feeding them. Could one grab when opportunity presents, or play close, perhaps defensive side, don't know, just spit balling.

Just a week ago had 25 possessions as a pure ruckmen

Last night he was average, and beaten by Stanley

But his 2019, and games since in the ruck have proven he is a quality ruckman

Hit out are the most overrated stat in footy!!!

By the way

Marshall is a much better ruckman than forward

His 2019 vs his 2020 indicates this

He is max a 1 goal per game Kosi style tall forward

His is a 20ppg ruckman who can still rest forward and average half a goal per game.

Just a week ago he dominated in the ruck!

With Ryder not playing it means that Marshall is first ruck and also means that Sharman comes into the team. If both ruckmen play with Marshall and Ryder sometimes resting forward, then there is no room for Sharman.
