If you’re good enough you’re big enough

Size has little to do with it

Eddie Betts is smaller than Jack Lonie

If Lones is cut, it’s because he couldn’t cut it, well he actually did for nearly a hundred games… but if he is delisted it’s due to his inconsistency. That being said, very few forward pockets are consistent. How have we seen Dan Butlers season?

Size is not the issue - would he be any better if he was a couple of inches taller. Contested marking is not really a crumbing forwards 1 Wood.

I disagree about selfishness- very team oriented

His pressure rating was also very good

His two main issues
1/ didn’t make the most of his opportunities (about 50%)

2/ too many quiet games - even for a forward pocket - just not enough scoring production

Lonie's game against Adelaide was unforgivable. And when you consider that the loss cost us a place in the finals, well ...

Be interesting to see if Dunstan is left out
Lonie? Meh....club knows what’s it’s doing and his flaws obvious ...not worth going over it imo

never minded lonie - tried his heart out, and won us a few games over the course, but we needed him to keep improving and he hasn't. just doesn't have an impact often enough.
if dunstan isn't played it could well be he's already off. good luck to him if so - took his second opportunity when it arrived. been a very good servant. also been a whipping boy on here for many, but garnered a lot of respect from others because he always put in.

1/ Was it just the Adelaide game that cost us finals

2/ Was Lonie the only player responsible for that loss

Because it seems

1/ we lost 12 games

2/ 21 other players played against Adelaide

No, of course not. Plenty of other games where weak individual perfromances have cost us dearly.

Maybe it's unfair to single out Lonie but good lord that performance was diabolical.

All I hope is we don't get any serious injuries and the boys have a ripping mad Monday and then have a successful pre season.

Oh and I hope COVID is gone for ever by Xmas.

Is that too much to ask.

Lonie is not the only player that would go better in a better side equally there’s plenty of players in other clubs that would not do well at Saints. We lack depth and talent across the board

Lonie just doesn't kick enough goals, simple as that.

Lonie getting interest from other clubs, Wont fetch much but I think will be in AFL system next season - Look for clubs which need a small forward .

Agree Dud

If his conversion was better

Perhaps instead of 0.9g - 0.9b

If it was 1.2g 0.6b he would be similar to most AFL small forwards

But it’s not

My guess for bench is
Coff
Crouch
Clav
Byrnes

Due to only 2 talls in back 6 (Dougs n Wilks) we need 197cm Clav.

The others can't be played

Clav needs to be on the protein and the weights

You should have watched Ratts interview. He said they were going to play Bytel.

If every player was judged on their worse games

There wouldn’t be many good players floating around

Conversely you shouldn’t judge players on their best games either

Otherwise Lonie vs Hawthorn a couple years ago, makes him a gun!!!

It’s consistently delivering high output that makes you a quality player (Steele)

Unfortunately, Lones has not done that! His best is very good, his worst is poor - he plays more bad games than good.

He wouldn’t be on his own on StKs list there though

I don’t get what you’re arguing with Lonie BM!

Are you saying he is top 22?
As good as all the other starting small pockets on the comp?
Should def be on our list?
Has he had a good year?
Was last year good?
Would you pick him in the team ahead of Higgins, Butler or Long?

Quite literally my answer to all of those is no with the last question being the most debatable

Even if he’s not kicking more goals, Long would pressure better and be more likely to lay a big tackle/bump… or you have option of pushing him to half back if it’s an absolute stinker of a game up forward

Butler, for all the criticism he’s copped for having a down season has at least had a few good games this year and can at least use his speed and polish up ground

Higgins - well… he’s just head and shoulders above them all.

You’re so into stats and numbers that you miss the obvious question… is his contribution actually worthwhile?

So his numbers are on par with whoever…
Heck when was the last time he even had a good game?

H

Lonie is also horribly one sided. Horrible to the point he doesn't even acknowledge his right side. I'm guessing he only eats with a fork.

Again, not alone there. A couple of our ball magnets would prefer to be caught trying to get back on their left than embarrass themselves on their right.

Why is it only some on here can point out flaws or reasons why a player simply isn't good enough but if others do they are spreading vitriol and should only comment if they have performed better at AFL level?

I heard an epidemiologist the other day say we'd run out of alphabet letters. We're only at D. They'll roll it into the yearly flu jab.

About 3 cm taller than Membrey.
How tall is Clavarino? 197 apparently
Clav will surely be in the 22

Yep. two more changes. Bytel to replace Dunstan and Oscar to replace....?
Bump...   8-)

In
Ben Long, Jack Bytel, Paul Hunter
OUT
Darragh Joyce (Injured), Luke Dunstan (Omitted), Max King (Injured), Ryan Byrnes (Omitted )

Means last week's sub Oscar stays in the team.

Anyone know the situation with Hunter Clark? Still concussion issues?

Concerned of St Kilda.

Hopefully just a no risk policy Yorkeys. Makes sense, they've not risked anyone this week.

He has been good enough to play AFL

He’s played 87 games, kicked 75 goals

He’s even received Brownlow votes on a couple of games, including a BOG. Not an easy thing to do as a forward pocket.

Yes, that might be it for him

But to do that at 174 and 71 means you can play the game

BTW
Most left footers are one sided, in fact most players are.

95% of kicks in AFL footy are done on players preferred foot
