Saints indigenous players
Ratts said we have 9, I can count only 8.
But hey, the more the merrier AFAIC. They make us a better team.
We played 5 against the Tigers.
Paddy, Benny, Hill, Nasiah and Gresh,

Re: Saints indiginous players
I heard that too and was also wondering who might be the ninth one: Ryder, Long, Hill, NW-M, Gresham, Peris, Kyle, Windhager and ????
Perhaps Ratten was misidentifying Owens, who was one of the four inaugural graduates of St Kilda's Next Generation Academy program, but who qualified through the Academy's "multicultural" remit and not the "Indigenous" remit (unless I'm wrong and Owens is actually an Indigenous man, in which case I apologise).
BTW, next time Ratten is talking about the club's Indigenous players, I'd be happy if he would desist from referring to them as "Indigenous boys." To me, it sounds patronising and disrespectful: in the rural Australia of the not-too-distant past, all Aboriginal males employed by graziers were referred to as "boys", even if they were old and grey-haired.
But it's a wonderful thing to see the club with so many Indigenous players: I think there was a period only a few years back when we had none at all. Ratten also mentioned that the club has employed an elder (a woman, but I can't remember her name) to provide support for the Indigenous players.
All good.

Is it mean for me to also note that "Indigenous" is not spelt "indiginous"? (Sorry saynta)Ghost Like wrote: ↑Tue 05 Apr 2022 3:11pm Not having a dig saynta but Nasiah's name needs to be spelt better than you have.

Jo has wide experience in this space, resulting in the position she has recently assumed courtesy of her workplace history

Unless your indigenous, then you would not know if its patronising for them or not.

I thought that might be the case but couldn't find any mention of it.
So thank you.
Must be a record if we in fact played six.

Long's mother will be surprised to read that she has gotten her son's name wrong all these years.

Re: Saints indiginous players
Men using the term "girls" to refer to grown women is also likely to be perceived by some of the recipients to be belittling and patronising.saintly wrote: ↑Tue 05 Apr 2022 4:14pmmaybe we should stop calling the AFLW players as girls.meher baba wrote: ↑Tue 05 Apr 2022 3:12pmI heard that too and was also wondering who might be the ninth one: Ryder, Long, Hill, NW-M, Gresham, Peris, Kyle, Windhager and ????

Unless your indigenous, then you would not know if its patronising for them or not.
And I know for sure that it's a total no no for white people to refer to African-American males as "boys." And surely that - along with the word's historical usage in rural Australia (and similarly so in the US south and South Africa in the apartheid era) - provides enough red flags to suggest that, while I'm sure he meant absolutely no harm, Ratts would do well to avoid using it in relation to Indigenous players in the future.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a paid-up member of the woke brigade. But it's pretty obvious that, in this day and age, public figures need to be particularly careful with their words. Once the grievance brigade turns on you, there's absolutely no road to forgiveness.

Re: Saints indigenous players
Are all very good. We are fortunate.
Ratts clearly has a lot of affection and respect for them.
Words of endearment shouldn't be weaponised should they.
Aren't we all doing our best to find our way to reconciliation. Cheap shots don't help.
