Nicholson St Carlton watching the game above my friends restaurant while everyone was working downstairs.

I was supposed to be on standby to help out.

On his own you may have a point but he worked in tandem with Spider that year which allowed Spider to go forward. It was a good set up which most teams couldn’t handle.

Laz on his own would have also been handy in the grand final.

Lazar was very average

He played 7 games in 1997

People carry on like he was an AA ruckman

It was actually Adelaide who were missing 2 All Australians

Rehn would have not had too many problems with big Lazar

The loss of Everitt, who pushed forward kicking goals AND Vidovic who complemented Everitt by hanging around half back was costly

Then came Rehn

The ruck domination in the absence of Everitt and Vidovich was a significant factor in the result - including structurally

I didn’t say he was an AA ruckman but he would have been better that both Brett Cook and David Sierakowski.

Laz would come off the bench which would allow Spider to have a spell in the foward line which would stretch the opposition. If memory serves me correctly it was one of the reasons we did so well that season.

Lazar was a very average player at that level and more likely to bitch slap someone than knock them out.

However at the back end of 97 Lazar was in career best form and the Everett/ Vidovic combination was performing extremely well and the loss of these two really stung us.

Obviously Adelaide had big outs like Modra but losing Spider & Lazar was critical.

Tragedy???

Lazar was a huge loss as was Spider. Tom Campbell reminds me a bit of Lazar- strong physical presence, not a star, but I would have played him a lot more in the seniors this season.

Can you have two lumbering ruckmen in a team nowadays?

Very few teams do

It also takes our second best player from his best position.

Being a team out of the finals, we are not qualified to talk about how things should be done

Lazar was able to take contested marks on the backline and start another attack. Spider was able to take contested marks on the forward line and kick goals. The other out that affected the game was Tony Modra. Had he not been injured in the PF, we would have been playing Footscray and not Adelaide. When he was injured, Footscray was 7 goals up and Modra was missing marks and goals like he did in other pressure games. He went off and Jarman went to FF and kicked three goals, a move that was the emulated the following week when he kicked 6. In our PF, Cory McKernan did his shoulder in the first quarter to "even up" the ruck outs - Cook and Sierakowski beat Longmire and Simpson, neither of whom were ruckman. Alas, our luck ran out for the GF.

I didn’t realise that Lazar was such a dominant ruckman

Played 90 games in 9 years

And 7 games in his dominant 97

His legend is a bit different from reality

Modra won the Coleman in 97, Riccutio was a star of the comp

Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story though

Winning games in those years can be attributed to Lockett, Loewe, Harvey, Burke, Winmar, Grant, McAdam etc

Just a little bit more than a GOP ruckman who spent nearly as much time in the reserves as the seniors
