From that discussion, it's clear Thomas has been in conversations with people at the club in recent months. When asked about a new coach he said coaching selection processes were for "people who don't know what they're doing" . He said you should identify the best and go out and get them. When asked who should be considered for the coaching position he mentioned Hird & Choco Williams as well as a couple of others, but the last one he mentioned was Lyon. I got the feeling he mentioned Lyon last for a reason, and it wasn't because he didn't want him as coach.

He said other positions like list management and recruiting need to be addressed

Maybe Hird could bring in McVeigh as his assistant …and also Timid might help in some sort of capacity and we could appoint Sheedy as a football director. All these good Essendon people shouldn’t be lost to the game

GT was really impressive. He spoke with clarity about what went wrong, how to fix it and what we need to do next.

Don’t worry about the names he’s put up, I don’t think they were anything other than just some spitballing and, if anything, a bit of a bum steer.

The man thinks it is still 2005.
As mentioned below that is how they got Blight and Watson before that - how did that work out again.
Brilliant business man who got the most out of his ability as a coach but ultimately wasn't good enough to get tot he big dance - let alone win it.
SEN needed a sound grab and he is always up for that - hearing his own voice

Counter argument though is that going through the well designed process got us Watters and Richo.

A mix between between promising assistant and experience was Ratten.

The question on the table is how do you find a good coach?

Can’t say I know the answer… but it seems to me that you’re looking for a few clear qualities.

- Need to have a strong sense of a plan and a philosophy on coaching with an ability to be flexible/adaptable
Has to have a good sense of short, medium and long term goals

- Need to be an excellent communicator to sell the message, manage the media etc, work well with others but also work with playing group.
This is the key one because I think no one size fits all approach will work. Too much of a hard ass sees ppl get alienated/give up and leave, too gentle = being walked all over

- Need to be a really hard worker. Need to be be across everything happening with you list/staff and also what’s happening with other teams.

How to find this magical, mystical animal

I propose the all star team of Lyon, GT, Ratten, Hayes, Harvey and Enright

Lyon on strategy
GT on culture
Ratten on aura/atmosphere

The other 3 doing all the hard work and driving standards

Nailed it

Choc Williams is a premiership coach. Just saying.

Don't need Lyon back- he has no premiership as a senior AFL coach, couldn't get the team up and about in the 2010 GF replay and got outsmarted by Malthouse tactically. GT is probably just tossing ideas around.

Thomas leaves no doubt that he thinks the club has made the right decision.

Usually speaks sense to me and rate his coaching much higher than most.

GT and Lyon had one thing in common: they got the players believing they could win. Doesn't matter how good you are if you don't believe you can win. And if you do believe, anything's possible - look at the doggies' flag.

GT got them believing in themselves, Lyon got them to believe in his game plan.

And then he shafted the club, the players and the supporters. We don't want or need Ross Lyon. And if you think we do, then I suggest you look through the archives of the manner and circumstance of his departure.

Perhaps, but we were a mess off field at the time. Lyon saw the writing on the wall.

It wasn't great - and I was furious at the time - but right now, we need him more than he needs us.

We need him to do what exactly?

He's gunna bring home the silverware is he?

Is that what all the desperate Saints fans think he'll achieve for us?

What a conman! What a salesman!;

As far as he's concerned he couldn't give a sh!t whether he even gets close as long as he secures another multi million dollar contract

Poor old Scolops.

Loves Longy - gone
Likes Ratts as a coach - now gone
Hates Lethlean (apparently has made "countless" mistakes) - he's staying
Now the spectre of Rossy looming!

What a nightmare.

FWIW, I would love the 09 Rossy but not sure on the 23 Rossy.

If you check the archives you'll find I'm no fan of Ross Lyon. I think he behaved appallingly and in fact was one of the first to start this idea that if it's good for your family and your pocket then you should do it regardless of all other considerations.

That doesn't make me blind to what he brought to the table.
