Flip flopping on selling home games, themed matches

Post: # 1988019Post Otiman »

Meanwhile, St Kilda is lobbying the AFL for a blockbuster home game at the MCG in round three to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary.

The Age reports St Kilda is hoping to face off against a heavyweight Victorian club at the venue and make a notable start under new coach Ross Lyon.

St Kilda’s home venue is Marvel Stadium and the club helped draw 40,129 fans to the ground in the round one game against Collingwood, which proved the club’s biggest crowd of the year.

A potential fixture against Collingwood could again be on the cards, with St Kilda’s sole premiership coming with a win over the club in 1966.

Additionally, the club’s first game in the VFL (in 1897) was against the Pies, while they played off in a drawn grand final in 2010.
I find it a bit concerning for the mettle of the club, after all the talk of selling home matches and minimising themed rounds that this is our next move, no more than a few weeks after the review.

I hope we played University in round 3 150 years ago, we may be a chance.

This clearly isn't a themed match. It's a one-off birthday celebration and a very obvious idea.

Yep
Plus its in Melbourne so us members will all be able to attend and if we did play the pies at least 30k of there fans would go so a crowd of 55k + would be a good earner for the club

I've always felt we should have a Grand Final theme round, it would be the one match of every year' the club and the supporters could pretend they are involved in an actual grandfinal. I'd even have a Grand Final parade up Linton Street on the Friday and for authenticity we would lose a very close match in controversial circumstances.

Yes, the theme is "one-off birthday celebration".

I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, as I supported us playing games interstate and overseas. But it's a clear backflip from the club if we are entertaing this idea seriously.

I think it's a seriously entertaining idea

Our first game in the VFL in 1897 was against Collingwood.

My money would be on us playing them.

However in our first Victorian Football Season in the Metropolitan Clubs competition, the only other teams in it were Carlton, Melbourne, Albert-park, and North Melbourne. Out of those, Carlton would be the likely choice for the match.

Speaking of home games, anyone know how Marvel renovations are going, how they will improve the game day experience next year?
(I'm not sure what was being done behind the big fences but they were a bit of a nuisance this year?).

Our first game at Moorabbin was also against Collingwood. Drew 51,370 and we won by a goal.

Plus add the AFL members and factor in the MCC members and the numbers should be in the high 60,000s. Good outcome for the club - better than playing in Cairns or Wellington.

I remember in 1990 we drew 68,000 when we played them at the G.

Or actually win the Grand Final comfortably, and our opponent who finished on top of the ladder challenge us to play it all over again.

Any theme round needs to be deeply rooted in reality unless ofcoarse the theme is about fantasy or mystical experiences in search of the altered state of consciousness.

The problem with themed games, (IMHO) was that the theme may have been a distraction for some players, affecting preparation, etc.
E.g. if a player is committed to doing media or other things around the theme, that causes him to juggle all his other lifestyle stuff- family stuff, etc.

Better to have all players isolated from theme stuff and let club admin do it.
Let players have a normal game prep leading up to it

Historical fact:
We won the 1913 Grand Final against Fitzroy by 25 points. Because they finished on top, they had the right to challenge us. We lost the replay by 13 points.

it's a good rule

should bring it back

or make the Final
... best of 3

that'd test the strength of your squad

I reckon we should only play one of the teams who were actually around with us in the old metropolitan league pre-VFA era.
Carlton (most likely)
Melbourne (could be possible as they are the oldest team in it and are a MCG tenant club)
Albert-park
North Melbourne
Geelong (could be a good match up), in the 1870s they were in the Provincial League and played teams like Ballarat, Barwon, Maryborough and Ararat.
