Our young mids are all big

Post: # 1989127Post D.B.Cooper »

Circumstance, planned or is this just the way of the future?
I did notice this year most of the top rated mids were 180-185cm.

We are building a new midfield for the future.

Big on-ballers/ wingman

Phillipou - 192cm
Owens - 191cm
NWM - 187cm
Bytel - 189cm
Windhager is the runt at 185cm but makes up for it with grunt

Could Coffield move to a wing at 191cm, he's got all the attributes?

I do think the size will be a massive advantage as these guys build the bodies to go with their height.
The natural combative nature of Owens and Windhager is a bonus.

I was disappointed to miss MacKenzie, but Phillipou is an interesting player.
Could he be a figjam bust? - yes!
Is that likely with RTB, Banger & Lenny guiding him? - Unlikely!
Does he have the skill & attributes to be the best player selected in the draft? - Yes!
Will be a fascinating watch over the next 5 seasons.

It’s bemusing how people view a young player that has confidence in his own a ability as a figjam.
For too long the club has gone the conservative route in recruiting private school average footballers.
Mattaes is the type we need, with the game and swagger that’ll get our latent supporters back going to the footy.
He is probably the most exciting draftee we’ve had since Rooey!

One thing and one thing only gets supporters to the footy at AFL level...wins...lots of them and over many years.

It really fills a list need having mids who are as strong overhead are they as on the ground. Owens, Phillipou & Windhager are all strong marks and can rotate forward which will separate us from the pack moving forward.

I am also confident Phillipou will be an exceptional AFL player.

Cheers D.B.. I didn't realise Bytel was that tall, 189 is a good size and he's a solid unit.

I think Coffield will stay in the back half and hopefully reduce the need for Membrey to drop back as much. I just hope both Coffield & Hayes get through 2023 running straight ahead and building confidence.

Bytel is as slow as treacle unfortunately in the mould of Dunstan. Probably has to play 18+ games next year to stay on the list beyond 23.

Saintmike, I don’t think being a figjam is a bad thing, greats like Buckley, Carey, Brereton for a very small sample size of hundreds who had it in spades.

As long as you have the goods to back it up and the coaches and senior players to let you know when to pull your head in and harness it, I actually think it can be an real asset.

Phillipou comes across as a cocky, confident young man, but you have to love his enthusiasm. I certainly think he could be something special, but it is extremely early at this point in time.

There appears very little love for one dimensional inside mids in modern footy.

More unadulterated bulls*** from you. Do you have anything positive to say about any of the young Saints players? Your negative s*** is really boring.

Much to the disgust of Diesel Williams.

The two way running era probably has something to do with it.

And Mattaes is still 17 almost a year younger than Mackenzie and Cadman

But

How many on our List are over 193cm and who are they?

This is our Achilles in my view

And has been over the last couple of seasons

We can now add blistering speed and good overhead to our midfield also with Olli Hotton.
