I had Gallagher penned as out the door when the Lyon announcement happened. At the time the previous 3 trade and draft periods have been mediocre at best. He was at least partly responsible for the Hannerbery deal. However this year I think we have hit it out of the park, and he saved his reputation.

The club will embark on a process to find a replacement although it remains unclear whether former Carlton list boss and ex-St Kilda assistant coach Stephen Silvagni will be a target.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've never been quite sure exactly what a List Manager actually has to do, or what his responsibilities are.

Thanks to the luxury of time now that I've retired I have been able to find the following article about this very subject, pertaining to Nick Austin who was interviewed in 2020 after he was recruited by Carlton FC; it shows that he/she has to develop a strong background in a variety of behind the scenes roles and a hell of a lot of travelling which explains why James Gallagher is not able to carry this out for the Saints from Adelaide:

I have trust in Geoff Walsh to come to the right decision on a new list manager.

Jobs for mates is not an option.

The replacement has to be SoS or Trout, they both pre qualify.

Please no to SOS.
Surely holds some type of AFL record history as the worst recruiting and list manager of all time in the AFL.

Will Saints chase SOS after list manager’s exit?

St Kilda is on the hunt for a new list manager to help spearhead the club’s resurgence after parting ways with talent boss James Gallagher.

The Saints confirmed on Tuesday Gallagher would depart the club as he looked to move home to South Australia for family reasons.

The club will embark on a process to find a replacement although it remains unclear whether former Carlton list boss and ex-St Kilda assistant coach Stephen Silvagni will be a target.

Silvagni was cut by the Blues over an alleged conflict of interest because his son Jack was on the club’s list and has since led the league website’s trade coverage in recent years.

St Kilda’s list strategy has failed to help the club rise up the ladder in recent years following moves to top-up on some mature-age recruits including high-priced midfielders Brad Hill and Daniel Hannebery.

Other pick-ups include Dan Butler, Paddy Ryder, Zak Jones, Dougal Howard, James Frawley, Dean Kent and Shaun McKernan.

St Kilda’s recent football department review – which led to the sacking of coach Brett Ratten – recommended a change in list strategy after the club missed finals in 2022 despite an 8-3 start to the season.

Former North Melbourne coach David Noble helped lead the review, while former Kangaroos list boss Glenn Luff completed a list analysis for the Saints which found it lacked top-end talent.

The club’s new list boss will be on a mission to add more A-Graders, after missing out on Collingwood free agent Jordan De Goey, and recalibrate the salary cap.

The Saints are known to have a tighter-than-expected cap after the moves to add some mid-tier players on decent wages.

Gallagher, who played 38 games for Adelaide Crows, joined the Saints in 2018 after a career in banking.

Chief executive Simon Lethlean thanked Gallagher for his contribution to the club over the past four years.

“James has contributed significantly to the improvement of our list and culture throughout his time at the Saints,” Lethlean said.

“He has an appetite for hard work and his care and passion for seeking to improve the quality of our list and the culture of our club was evident, no more so than when taking on more than just his primary duties throughout the Covid interrupted 2020 and 2021 years.

“We wish James, his wife Laura and children Jack, Alice and Olivia all the best for their move back home.”

The fact SoS and Trout are close mates of Ross puts them in the box seat you'd think, especially now the mood of the supporter base is accepting of giving Ross another go after his failed list rebuilding with Freo then I can see either of SoS or Trout being welcomed back to the club with open arms.

Personally I thought Trout got judged harshly and SoS has fingerprints over the current list build which is shaping up to be a contender. If Ross deserves a second chance what would be the argument against either of these other than its looking like
a club of jobs for mates, but is that such a bad thing in footy?

After all Ross's employment was a Captains pick by Bassett so Ross must be given the same freedom.

Gags harshly judged on my opinion
Put together a list that played finals , and if wasn’t for a few key outs after the bulldogs final , may well have given Richmond a hell of a scare the following week.

2021 destroyed by injuries with at times only 25ish fit players to choose from - and yet were still in the hunt to make finals late in the season

2022 as well know started 8-3 and then something happened that saw Ratten go from re-signed to out the door.

Salary cap in the best shape for a while.
Identified we need to hit the draft hard for youth and topped up nicely over the last 2 years. All this crap talk about being quiet in the trade- you can’t bring non-Free agents players in for free - you need draft picks to bring them in . So it’s one or the other.

The fact he wanted to work from Adelaide didn’t sit with old school Walsh so it was inevitable he wasn’t going to last.

If Lyon gets us into finals next year or 2024 it will be off the back of the list that Gags built.

SOS & Trout both left crap lists behind as their legacy
Next appointment so important.

You would think so. The discussions on list manager position and Gags wanting to go back to Adelaide, go back months.

Even if the decision wasn't made until recently, the 'process' would have already kicked off back then.

What ever don't get that "Guy"

The clown Guy from Collingwood who totally stuffed their list management to the extent they forced top tier players to leave just to meet the salary cap.

In hindsight was it so bad for the Pies to lose Adam Treloar. They did make an almost Hanneberry scale blunder with Grundy's contract, but.

That's right. Perhaps Collingwood fans don't react well to criticism even when fair so Cornes concentrates on softer targets. We on the other hand can tend to self flaggellate, some almost welcoming it. E.g. one or two on here leave Cornes in their wake with their constant nark. Solidarity comrades!

Interesting that the media article reproduced on here makes no mention of perhaps the best of those recruited (from Adelaide) BUT includes Frawley and McKernan, both signed for one year exclusively as cover given the demographics of our List

Neither Frawley nor McKernan were signed with a long term view - they were given a one year Contract each in the hope they did not have to play at AFL level

They were purely insurance

Hill is class - as was Hannebery, confirmed by when he did get on the Park, picking up 3 Brownlow votes in his final game

Hill remains on our List and is a first choice player

Howard leads our defence as our only KPP size defender

Butler has been useful playing a role whilst Higgins, another not mentioned, has his future ahead of him - and has shown his capabilities

Ryder gave excellent service - his presence with Marshall coinciding with St Kilda wins (and how costly was the loss of Ryder, Hill and Long from the side that lost to Richmond in 2020 - then the loss of Carlisle with his back concerns?)

And Jones has had several 30 plus possession games coinciding with St Kilda wins - the health set back and weight loss leading into 2022 setting him back

Simply, and typically from this media outlet, all you get is uneducated rubbish

The uneducated telling their fellow uneducated what they do not know

And confirmed

I don't think the recruitment of the mature age players was necessarily a bad option in isolation as a recruitment strategy, where it failed was the inability to continue that strategy over the following years. For example we needed to follow up with the recruitment of ready made A grade midfielders to avoid the strategy stalling, and therin lies the problem with the quality of the current list. You could argue had we not recruited the fab five in 2019 could we have tanked to another wooden spoon, but equally you can argue all it did was place us in a middle of tbe ladder holding pattern becaue of said inability to continue the mature aged recruitment spree.

Coming full circle we come back to the argument, what is more important, a coach or a list manager?

"The Saints are known to have a tighter-than-expected cap after the moves to add some mid-tier players on decent wages."

I dont understand this. Hannebury took a haircut in 2022 and is now off the books.
Crouch wage was band 3, with crows getting a 2nd rounder
Hill is in big bucks, but as has 2 years left his contract. So one can start planning post Hill contracts.
Is Jones initial contract is over? His new one would be less money. Cannot be on much in 2023
So who else did we bring in?
Butler. Cant imagine his salary is high in 2023
Higgins may be on a bit, he came over from Tigers.
But again, he already has run two yers of that contract

Surely our Salary Cap is not very tight?

If you think we made a near 1m play for DeGoey I call BS on how tight how cap really is
If it is…that explains Gags going
