Yes it seems we have gotten the sub (player and timing) wrong more often than not. I still think it should be used to mitigate risk from injury and have the sub as a player in an role we are most at risk. There aren't many "super sub" stories in the competition at the moment.

You also need to make sure players that need full games in the VFL get them. You can't just play one player as a sub the whole season unless you significantly change the way you go about subs, and build/train the body for a 30min burst.

On delisting, it probably needs its own thread, but we will want to take 3 draft picks, elevate 3 rookies that have been on the list 3 years (Heath, Sharman, Wood), and leave ourselves room for a supplemental or MSD pick. The list is currently full.

I think the club would do something like this:

Rookie Elevate: Wood, Heath
Rookie Delist and re-draft: Sharman

Need to delist 5 to go to the preseason draft. The rookie spots can be used for SSP and MSD. I'm not sure on contract status.

Delist or Trade 5 of the following: Billings, Jones, McKenzie, Campbell, Highmore, Connolly, Bytel
I think you’ll find Billings & Gresham won’t be at the club next year..heard a whisper Webster will retire..Cambell likely gone if we get TDK..Highmore & Connelly likely delisted.
I think Sharman & Allison are contracted!!
I think that’s all fine re Billing’s/Gresham
Gotta give to get
Connolly ….I think the kid has skills ….he should he persisted with
Highmore ….hard one ….is it just his disposal that hurts him ?
Surely Jones Gresham Billing’s Campbell …? Over McKenzie

I am hoping HIghmore can be like a Shane or Darryl Wakelin one day. I hope he is not delisted.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Honestly

What do you think we’d get for Billings and Gresham?

My guess
Gresham 3rd round Compo
Billings 4th rounder

The odds of the DPs even playing a game is pretty slim

Buy high, sell low is not smart business

Both will be on the move be next year get used to it
But the answer
Certainly Billing’s ain’t

Now this is an interesting topic - the sub strategy.

It comes down to whether the sub is for adding fresh legs vs covering potential loss of a player through injury.

At the moment, I think our sub is based on the type of player we can LEAST afford to lose vs that week's opponent.

Against a running team that might be a runner.

Against a tall team that might be a tall.

Or against any team that might be where we need back-up but don't want them in the 22 on rotation.

Sharman can play:
- tall forward
- tall defender
- relief ruck
- wing

Given we go into a game with only 1 ruck, then Sharman is a pretty handy sub when the opposition has 2 rucks or 1 great ruck.

Also means we can carry 1 extra mid on our bench and get the game long benefit of extra rotations / sharing the load and therefore less need for extra legs.

I find the emergencies this week bizarre

Tom Campbell?
Cooper Sharman?
Tom Highmore?
Leo Connolly?

3 limited position players and a player who makes Jason Gram look like Joel Selwood?

Was really only possible in recent years as the US developed nuclear plant that will never need refuelling in the life time of the sub.
But the best sub strategy, should blow all opponents out of the water.

Should go back to the old days and have a 19th and 20th man, if we're talking about submarines and other outdated things.

Tonight

In wet conditions

Bizarre!!!!

We have no clue, and it’s pretty simple

The advantage of a tactical sub is fresh legs

So it HAS to be a runner - who can use his legs to get into space and get the footy and carry the ball

If we had blokes who could do that, they'd be in the best 22.

We don’t have any runners in the twos

Paton
Bytel
Connolly
Peris

All of which would have been more important last night than Sharman - who is worse below his knees than most.

Other emergencies were perplexing

A FB
A Ruckman

I mean fk me - single position players who are not going to give you run?!

Peris? Never played
Paton - zero run suspect by foot
Bytel - max’s what 17 possessions when he plays???

I think you’re reaching again…

Sharman was good when he came on
We simply have much bigger issues than this tbh

What did Sharman do that was good

A couple of pack spoils?? They weren’t going to be marked anyway…. he had 3 handballs?!

Any ground level player in those conditions would have been better?!

Paton
BOG in the last two seconds games - 35 yesterday
Bytel averages 7 clearances a game in the VFL
Peris would have given pace and ground ball pressure
Connolly skill and run - even though he is soft

Any ground level player would’ve been nice

Instead - in the teaming rain - we brought on a tall marking player who is useless at ground level

Not a reach
Common sense

Most Patons vfl stats came from kick ins and not to advantage
Bytel gives no outside run - more of the same needs to replace Ross
Peris - delusional
Sharman came on abs dud what our so called experienced FB couldn’t manage - made a bloody contest
Still reaching

Bytel ran a sub 10 3k in pre season

So you’re a bit wrong there

I think the conditions would’ve suited him

If Peris is delusional- he should be delisted
Watched him in the twos - he’s not great but what he can do is run, chase and tackle!
Would’ve been handy

Paton - was the highest rated player on the ground - kick ins my arse - I was there! Obviously you were not

Connolly
I’ll give you that one - he’s no good

Seb Ross won BnFs back in the day too …how’s that working out for you?
Peris?? Our saviour?????😂

I can't see a spot for Campbell but would like to see him play on at Sandy in a development role with the young guys. We have Owens, Hayes, Caminiti, Keeler as relief rucks, and Marshall, Heath as primary rucks. Keeler could slot into primary ruck in a few years.

Peris - a saviour?

I’m not even sure he can play?!

What I’m saying is he’s worth a shot as a sub in wet conditions to come on and give us extra run

Personally I think Cooper Sharman has been good as the sub.

Certainly has made an impact when he has come on.

From another angle, Camitini has dropped off in effectiveness - maybe include Sharman as the second tall to take the pressure off Max

Cooper has been good as the sub, but nothing about his play is really benefited by him coming on late. Should be using high energy line breaking runners as the sub.

Peris is made for it.
